On July 21, 2011. Age 75. Lifelong resident of Gloucester City. Loving husband of 40 years to Roslyn “Jackie” Spencer. Loving father of Janet Watkins and the late Stephen Watkins. Cherished grandfather of Jacqueline Watkins and the late Jason Watkins-Spencer. Dear brother of James Spencer (Jane), late William Spencer, Late John Spencer, Late Joseph Spencer (surviving Ann) and the late Daniel Spencer (surviving Marie). Matt graduated from Gloucester Catholic H.S. class of 1954. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. Matt was a lifelong faithful and devoted parishioner of St. Mary’s R.C. Church in Gloucester City where he was the sexton since 1995. Prior to his retirement, Matt was an Ironworker for Union Local #399 for 25 years. He was a longtime member, Junior Vice-President for 5 years, Trustee and Handyman for Townsend C. Young V.F.W Post #3620 in Gloucester City. Matt was also a member of Memorial A.A. in Gloucester City.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday morning at 11 AM at St. Mary’s R.C. Church: 426 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City. There will be no viewing or visitation. Inurnment with U.S. Army honors on Thursday at 11:30 AM in New St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Bellmawr. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church: 426 Monmouth St., Gloucester City, NJ 08030. Please write in the memo: Matthew C. Spencer.
