Roskos wins national title in 3-meter diving event
Nashville, TN ... Sophomore Danica Roskos (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) won the national title in the 3-meter diving event at the opening day of the 2011 Division III Swimming and Diving Championships held at the University of Tennessee.
Roskos posted a score of 485.90 to win the 11-diver competition by the . She claimed the second diving national title in Lions program history and first since Diane Maiese won the 1-meter diving event in 1997.
Freshman Sabrina Lucchesi (Columbus, NJ/Notre Dame) also earned All-American honors in the 3-meter event placing 9th with a final score of
Junior Laura Pierce (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) broke her own record in the 50-yard freestyle as she sped to a time of 23.15 in the preliminary race. Pierce entered the 2011 championships with eight All-American citations and now has her ninth.
TCNJ’s 200-yard medley relay team set a new school record in the preliminary race with a time of 1:45.46. Freshman Ashley Conroy (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), sophomore Kayleigh Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park), Pierce, and junior Traci Hofer (Millville, NJ/Millville) placed ninth in the preliminaries…
Senior Margaret Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) finished 20th in the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:01.54. Molloy is a four-time All-American and will compete in the 200-freestyle and 400-medley relay event tomorrow.
Also competing on Thursday will be Hofer, senior Danielle Dilts (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), Shangle, and Pierce will race in the 200-freestyle relay. Conroy, Shangle, and Pierce will join Molloy will swim in the 400-medley while Pierce will also compete in the 100-fly.
Men’s swimming
Sophomore Adam Schneider (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) earned All-American honors in the 50-yard freestyle event. He posted the ninth-fastest time in the preliminary heats finishing in 20.56 … Schneider is the Lions program record holder in the event with a time of 20.42.
Freshman Stephen Tarnowski (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein Germany) enjoyed his first taste of NCAA championship competition swimming in the 200 individual medley. He finished with a season-best time of 1:53.93 and placed 28th overall in the event.
Tomorrow, Schneider, freshman Stephen Gibson (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine), junior Ryan Clark (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine), and senior Shawn Kircher (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) in the 200-medey relay race. Tarnowski will take the starting block in the 400-individual medley, while Medvecky and Schneider will both compete in the 100-yard butterfly. Kircher will take his shot at 100-free.
Junior diver TJ Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) will dive in the 1-meter event.
