Three Receive GHS Distinguished Alumni Awards I cnbnews.net

  On June 1, Gloucester City High School (GHS) presented Academic Awards to current students and the Distinguished Alumni Award to three qualified former graduates.


  Receiving the Alumni Awards were Jane Gellien, Joseph J. Hagan and James E. Hannold.


  Jane Gellien (nee Carson) was a member of the Class of 1950.


  Jane was a medical professional for 40 years after graduating from the Albert Einstein School of Nursing in Philadelphia.


  After working there and at West Jersey Hospital, she put her career on hold to raise three children.

  She returned to the workforce at Underwood Memorial Hospital and become one of the first two IV therapists. She then became head of the Infection Control Department.

  She was recognized by the National Association of Infection Control Practioners in 1966. She received recognition from the Gloucester County Board of Health for her work with HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, among many of her other activities and accomplishments.  

  Joseph J. Hagan, Class of 1968, earned a Master of Science from Drexel University. In 1985 he earned a Senior Reactor Operator License from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

  Mr. Hagan completed the Program for Business Management at Harvard Business School in 1989, and was president and chief nuclear officer for the First Energy Nuclear Operating Company from 2003 until his retirement in 2010.

  He continues to remain a member of the American Nuclear Society.

  James E. Hannold, Class of 1947, was one of 12 Gloucester City High School students to leave school to serve his country in World War II and then graduate.

  He received many medals during his service in the US Navy, including the Bronze Star for bravery and meritorious service performed in the D-Day Invasion. He was an artist who learned most of his art training from a teacher at Gloucester High named Mr. Silberman, who sent him his art supplies while he was in the Navy.  He was a First class Carpenter and Construction Superintendent for 40 years. 

  He is a member of Local 393 Carpenter's Union. He is a member of The American Management Association. He led the construction of The Magnolia Historical Society which he designed and raised funds to build.

  He was a Councilman in Magnolia for eight years, and a served on the Planning Board for 10. He has received the Magnolia Medal and the Good Citizen Award from the Camden County freeholders.

  He has won many art awards through the Camden County Cultural Arts commission, and has worked on commission painting renderings of historic buildings and homes.

  James is the father of Mary Lou Adams from Gloucester City, Terri Taggart from Metuchen, Sandra Adams of Stratford.

  His wife Mary (Pine) Hannold, formerly of Gloucester City and Magnolia, passed away in August of 2010.

  All Distinguished Alumni Awards will be hung in the Media Center Wall at Gloucester City Junior Senior High School.
