HILLARY'S GIFT TO ROME: LADY GAGA -cnbnews.net

Image via Wikipedia Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (photo) is quoted as saying that the State Department was "instrumental in sealing the deal" for Lady Gaga to appear at the June 11 Euro Pride concert in Rome. Catholic League president Bill Donohue responds as follows: The Obama administration has U.S. troops fighting in four wars—Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Yemen—and yet the Secretary of State has time to lobby Lady Gaga to attend a homosexual extravaganza in Rome. The fact that the Queen Monster performed near the Vatican was clearly not a problem for Secretary Clinton. Lady Gaga is known in Catholic circles for strutting like a tramp while dressed as a nun, swallowing rosaries, taking liberties with the Cross, and parading around in glossy-red habits. None of this, obviously, is seen as problematic by the Secretary of State. One would think that a feminist might object to a video that... Read more →

Group Overcomes Odds to Replenish Oyster Reefs -cnbnews.net

Image via Wikipedia WILMINGTON, Del. — Sea captains employed by the Delaware Bay Oyster Restoration Task Force are currently wrapping up efforts to replenish oyster reefs off Delaware and New Jersey. This comes after the task force successfully raised $200,000 to continue its seven-year-old program. According to past experience, these efforts will boost the economies of local bayshore communities by approximately $5 million over the coming years. Rutgers University has estimated that past investments in shell planting have resulted in a return of at least $25 for every $1 invested in oyster restoration, and in some years much higher. A report released by the University of Delaware in May notes that retailers and wholesalers paid almost $3.7 million for last year’s harvest alone. In addition to stimulating the economy, oyster restoration also results in cleaner water and better fish habitat. But shell planting needs to be done in June or... Read more →

Bishop Galante: Change can be difficult -cnbnews.net

by Bishop Joseph Galante Bishop of the Camden Diocese We have been going through much change lately as we move to consolidate from 124 parishes to 70 in order to better serve six major pastoral priorities: the need for improved liturgy, lay ministry, the need for an increase in priestly vocations, developing outreach to young adults and youth, compassionate outreach to those who need assistance, and the desire to promote faith formation at all ages. It has meant hard work, as pastors and lay people pull disparate communities together in service of the Gospel. Now the first fruits of those changes are beginning to emerge. During these past few months, I have had the privilege, thanks to a series of deanery meetings held throughout the diocese, of listening to the stories of how our parishes are meeting our pastoral priorities. So far, we’ve had seven of these nine scheduled meetings,... Read more →

WHERE GAY MARRIAGE IS HEADED -cnbnews.net

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on where gay marriage is headed: Whenever the American people have had a chance to approve gay marriage, they have rejected it. In the more than 30 states that have put this issue to a vote, homosexuals have never won. The only arenas they have been able to score a victory are in some state legislatures and courts. In other words, this is a classic case of the people vs. the elites. Ultimately, this issue will not be resolved in the courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court: it will be decided by a constitutional amendment. Though the Federal Marriage Amendment prevailed in the House in 2006 by a margin of 236-187, it failed to achieve the necessary 290 votes required to pass a constitutional amendment; two-thirds of both chambers of Congress, and three-fourths of the states (38), are needed. New Jersey Policy Perspective: Busting the Myth-cnbnews.net

As a matter of fact... Busting the myth: The real numbers show N.J. is not the most overtaxed state in the nation Tax Myth: New Jersey has the highest tax "burden" of any state in the nation. Tax Fact: When it comes to state and local government, people who live in Wyoming pay a greater percentage of their income to taxes than do people who live in New Jersey. In The Sunday Star-Ledger, New Jersey Policy Perspective dispels some of the persistent myths about state and local taxes in New Jersey. Analyzing unaltered data from the U.S. Census and the U.S. Department of Commerce, NJPP shows that residents of seven other states, as well as the District of Columbia, devote a higher percentage of their personal income to state and local taxes than do those of us who live in New Jersey. Weekly Basket: Popping the Gas Balloon -cnbnews.net

Volume XVI No. 25: June 24, 2011 Momentum is a powerful legislative force -- once a bill starts swirling the bowl, it's only a matter of time before it goes down. More than a dozen lawmakers have recently withdrawntheir co-sponsorship of the subsidy laden NAT GAS Act - a bill designed to bolster the natural gas industry by lavishing it with taxpayer cash. The bill still has scores of co-sponsors, but it is clearly taking on water. This exodus is occurring because lawmakers are finally sobering up to its ridiculous premise---with our left hand battling to end a fiscal crisis, let's leave our right to add billions in subsidies for natural gas. Dozens of fiscally conservative organizations (including TCS) are calling on lawmakers to rein in energy subsidies to help deal with the spending, revenue, and entitlement crisis crushing our country's budget. Yet some lawmakers want Washington to pick another... Read more →

New Cancer Vaccine Coming -cnbnews.net

ScienceDaily (June 20, 2011) - Mayo Clinic investigators and collaborators from the United Kingdom cured well-established prostate tumors in mice using a human vaccine with no apparent side effects. This novel cancer treatment approach encourages the immune system to rid itself of prostate tumors without assistance from toxic chemotherapies and radiation treatments. Such a treatment model could some day help people to live tumor free with fewer side effects than those experienced from current therapies. The findings appear in the journal Nature Medicine. "We are hopeful that this will overcome some of the major hurdles which we have seen with immunotherapy cancer research," says Richard Vile, Ph.D., Mayo Clinic immunologist, Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Professor and a lead author of the study. Clinical trials could begin within two years. Mayo's immunotherapy research led by Dr. Vile already shows promise in treating prostate cancer and melanoma. It also is a... Read more →

Mount Ephraim Resident Praises Public Works Dept. -cnbnews.net

By Leigh Anne Hubbs Gloucester City News Mount Ephraim Borough received a gracious letter from a 2nd Avenue resident thanking Supervisor Ken Jones and an employee of the Public Works Department for their assistance. The letter was read, and praised, during the recent Board of Commissioners meeting. Last month a large tree limb had broken away from a tree on the resident’s property, yet remained dangerously suspended by other branches. It was unknown as to when the limb might fall. The homeowner, Carl Ingram, contacted the Public Works Department regarding the limb. Ken Jones and an employee left their lunch break to take a look at the tree and then called the borough’s tree service to have the loose limb removed. Mr. Jones and the employee later returned to see the process of the limb removal through. In other business, the “no left turn” ordinance is now in effect for... Read more →

Students and schools hopeful, nervous about Choice program | courierpostonline.com

by Barbara S. Rothschild Brooklawn Superintendent John Kellmayer agreed. Alice Costello School has been accepting Choice students since Brooklawn joined its pilot program 10 years ago. "Districts didn't really have time this year to prepare," he said. "Next year will be their learning curve, as they decide whether they are going to aggressively go out and recruit students." Kellmayer, whose Choice students mostly come from neighboring Camden and Gloucester City, said the draw for Choice schools isn't more computers or a specific program, but something more basic. "Most parents are looking for a safe and orderly environment. They want to know, "Can you teach my child to read?' " In September, the state Legislature passed the Interdistrict Public School Choice Program Act of 2010. It updates and modifies the... continue via www.courierpostonline.com Read more →

Gafgen forgets her troubles | South Philly Review

By Jess Fuerst Posted Jun. 16, 2011 In cabaret, anything goes. So when Sarah J. Gafgen, of Ninth and Ritner streets, takes the stage June 23, she can’t be sure of what to expect. Photo by Jay Sullivan “I have an interaction with the audience. I have sort of planned what I’m going to say, but the great thing about cabaret is that it’s really interactive. There is no wall between you and the audience and you can poke fun and if you see them do something silly, you can stop in the middle of the song if you want,” Gafgen, 26, said. “There are no rules when it comes to cabaret, no right or wrong. It’s a completely individual art form, which is cool.” Gafgen will be taking the stage with her cabaret “Forget Your Troubles …” at Society Hill Playhouse, 507 S. Eighth St., followed by Deborah Billups’... Read more →
