While the time-tested baseball cap still has its sparkle, Smithson and fellow
Gloucester Catholic alumnus Pat Harker (courier post photo) have given the school reasons to be proud.
Smithson was a standout pitcher under former coach Joe Gallagher for the Rams prior to his 1964 graduation. He and Harker, a 1977 GCHS graduate and former standout football player, belong to an exclusive club these days: The South Jersey natives each hold positions as presidents of major universities.
Smithson takes over as St. Joe's interim president Wednesday, while Harker has served as president of the University of Delaware since 2007, after a lengthy career as dean of the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania.
Each took different paths to their current careers, but both see South Jersey roots and a Gloucester Catholic education as ...........................
