Tips and Snippets: Christie for President; Gas Prices; Tornado

By Bill Cleary (CNBNEWS.NET)-I LIKE YOUR GOVERNOR! In March we made our annual "Snow Bird" trip to the warm Florida coast. The 1,100 mile ride takes about 18 to 19 hours. We take a couple of days to make the trip. Why hurry we have the time. Stopping along the way gives us the opportunity to talk with people from all over the country. One thing that amazed us this year was how many people, perfect strangers, who told us how much they like our governor, Chris Christie. People from up and down the east coast and from the mid-west all said the same thing, "He would make a good president. I would vote for him." I don't know about you but I found this interesting that our Governor has that much of a following from people in other states. In case you were wondering, two United States presidents have... I thought it was a tragic mistake,” Obama said to a crowd at the Springfield, Illinois town square on Feb. 10, 2007. “Today we grieve for the families who have lost loved ones, the hearts that have been broken and the young lives that could have been. DEP MOVES TO SUPPRESS SOUTHERN PINE BEETLE; INVASIVE PEST THREATENING PINELANDS FORESTS

(11/P56) TRENTON - State foresters this week are beginning suppression activities to address infestations of the southern pine beetle, which destroyed a record number of acres of South Jersey pine forests last year, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin announced today. "The invasive southern pine beetle is a major threat to our unique Pinelands region," said Commissioner Martin. "We need residents and private owners of forest lands to help us look out for this pest and report any infestations. With early detection, foresters and tree experts can help greatly limit the damage." DEP will begin control activities on State lands this week through the directional felling of infested trees. This involves cutting trees, dropping them in the direction of the infestation outbreak's origin, and leaving them on the ground. The horizontal position of the trees disorients the larvae and beetles, which prevents them from spreading to new trees and... Read more →

WH Working on Executive Order That Critics Say Will Stifle Political Speech | CNSnews.com

by Fred Lucas Washington (CNSNews.com) – In what the White House calls a push for transparency, a pending executive order would require companies doing business with the federal government to disclose political contributions to independent groups, but would not place the same requirement on public employee unions or federal grant recipients that typically donate to Democrats. Entitled the “Disclosure of Political Spending By Government Contractors,” the order would implement parts of the DISCLOSE Act, which failed to get through Congress last year. The legislation sought to restrict campaign speech after the landmark Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Commission U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld the right of corporations and unions to donate to campaigns. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed Monday that work is underway on the draft order, and linked the move to President Obama’s stated commitment to transparency. readvia www.cnsnews.com Read more →

Orange firefighters were sent to 124 Park Street at about 2:00 AM and arrived to find heavy smoke pushing from the first floor and occupants trapped on a second floor porch of an older large 2 ½ story frame duplex building. Large trees in front of the home made using the stick from Truck 1 impractical, so ground ladders were used to get the people off the porch. On the initial search, a body of a woman was located and removed. read via firefighterspot.com Read more →

Mt. Ephraim Voters Asked to Approve School Tax Increase

By Leigh Anne Hubbs Gloucester City News The majority of April’s Mount Ephraim Board of Education meeting focused on the upcoming election and budget vote April 27, where taxpayers are being asked to approve a 4.4 percent increase. The proposed 2011-2012 school budget totals $10,261,598. According to the district’s website, most of the 4.4 percent increase is due to fixed costs such as benefits, energy costs and tuition. A user-friendly version of the budget can be found at mtephraimpublicschools.-org, BOE website, Budget for the 2011-2012 School Year. The district’s broker advised that 2.1 percent of the budget increase is due to the Federal Health Care Reform Act, which includes a requirement that children of employees are to receive health benefits until age 26, three years longer than what the law previously required. “Outrageous” is what one resident said in regard to the amount of the school tax, and added that... Why Catholic Schools Matter by Patrick J. McCloskey, Sol Stern, City Journal

Who can doubt that the fortunes of charter schools are on the rise? Philanthropists both liberal and conservative have been showering money on charters, viewing them as a promising alternative to traditional public schools because of their relative freedom from union contracts and education bureaucracies. The number of charter schools across the country has soared. Charters have even inspired movies, including the 2010 documentary Waiting for “Superman,” which tells the story of several successful charter school networks in Harlem—where black and Hispanic parents, desperate to avoid the awful public schools, enter their children in lotteries to try to secure seats in the charters. What’s missing from this narrative, however, is an alarming fact: for every charter school recently opened in Harlem, two Catholic schools have had to close because of financial trouble. The same holds for New York City as a whole. Since inner-city Catholic schools have historically provided lifesaving... Read more →

NEW JERSEY'S BLACK BEARS HAVE EMERGED FROM THEIR WINTER DENS;

DEP OFFERS TIPS ON REDUCING CONFLICTS WITH BEARS (11/P55) TRENTON - Black bears have exited their winter dens throughout New Jersey and are entering their most active period of the year as they search for food and mates, making encounters with humans in populated areas more likely. To reduce the risk of such encounters, State residents-especially those living in "bear country'' in Northwest Jersey-- are urged to take some simple precautions. "There are some common sense steps people can take to reduce the risk of interacting with bears and enhancing public safety,'' said DEP Commissioner Bob Martin. "Most important is not to feed bears - intentionally or unintentionally. Bears that learn to associate food with people, and their homes and living areas, can become habituated to easy sources of food and become the nuisance bears that regularly forage in neighborhoods. That can result in troubling encounters.'' Intentionally feeding black bears... Read more →

Drone attacks in Libya: A mistake - PostPartisan - The Washington Post

Posted at 04:52 PM ET, 04/21/2011 By David Ignatius Drone attacks have become an addictive tool of U.S. national security policy, as illustrated by Thursday’s unfortunate announcement that President Obama has authorized their use in Libya. Armed with Hellfire missiles, the Predator drone is a tool for assassination from 10,000 feet. It has been used by the CIA, with a paper-thin veneer of deniability, to attack al-Qaeda operatives and related targets in the tribal areas of Pakistan, where other weapons do not reach. One would like to think that’s a special case, born of the extreme threat posed on Sept. 11, 2001, and the remoteness of the tribal areas where the attackers are hiding. But now we have Defense Secretary Robert Gates, accompanied by Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stating at a news conference that Obama “has approved the use of armed Predators” over... Read more →
