JONES NAMED 2010-11 NJAC ”PONY WILSON” MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Pitman, NJ—Kean University senior forward Jonathan Jones (Linden, NJ/Linden) has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference “Pony Wilson” Men’s Basketball Player of the Year for the 2010-11 season. His selection highlighted the 15-member 2010-11 NJAC men’s basketball all-conference team which was announced on February 22. All selections were made via a vote of the league’s 10 head coaches.
A three-time all-conference selection, Jones currently leads the NJAC in scoring (24.9 points per game), rebounding (14.2 per game) and field goal percentage (.594). A six-time NJAC Player of the Week selection, Jones ranks as the NCAA Division III national leader in both rebounding and double-doubles (23) as of the latest NCAA statistics through games of February 13. Against NJAC competition, he finished the conference season as the leader in both scoring (25.5 points per game) and rebounding (14.2 per game), while ranking second in the conference in field goal percentage (.611).
Richard Stockton College senior guard Kai Massaquoi (Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) was selected as the NJAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career. Massaquoi was also named the league’s top defender during the 2008-09 season in which he helped the Ospreys advance to the NCAA Division III National Championship Game. He currently ranks second in the league in steals (2.4 per game), fourth in assists (4.3 per game), and fifth in scoring (16.4 points per game). Against NJAC competition, he finished first in steals with an average of 2.7 per conference game.
Kean University freshman guard Michael Burton (Irvington, NJ/South Plainfield) was tapped as the NJAC Rookie of the Year. A three-time NJAC Rookie of the Week selection, he currently ranks ninth in the conference in both three-point field goal percentage (.371), and three-point field goals made per game (1.4). Burton also ranks as the top freshman scorer in the conference, currently with an average of 10.4 points per game.
Kean head coach Rob Kurzinsky was named the “John K. Adams” Coach of the Year by his peers. Kurzinksy has guided the Cougars to an 18-7 overall record and the NJAC South Division Championship via a 10-3 league mark. Kean will open play in the NJAC Tournament on February 22 when it hosts NJCU in a semifinal contest. With 18 victories prior to its first postseason contest, Kean has already accumulated the most wins in a season since 1994-95. In four seasons at the helm of the Cougar program, Kurzinsky has guided Kean to an overall record of 48-54.
