Governor sees them as costly and bureaucratic

With a cabinet member calling them costly and bureaucratic to operate, Gov. Chris Christie, in a move designed to save $100 million annually, wants to eliminate New Jersey’s 39 urban enterprise zones in 37 cities and towns by June 30.

The move, is expected to be questioned by the Democratic-controlled Legislature, which would have to approve the idea. Democrats represent at least 31 of the municipalities that would be affected by the governor’s move.

A report issued by the state Treasury Thursday identifies what the administration considers “significant shortcomings in the UEZ" program. The 28-year-old program was created to put zones in cities and towns which have suffered economic development problems and can include as much as 30 percent of the municipality. The zones are designed to lure consumers because the sales tax is half of the state rate.
