By Sara Martino Gloucester City News The Brooklawn Borough Council invited members of the Brooklawn Fire Department and EMS to last week’s meeting in an effort to clear the air. “Our purpose of asking you to come here to the meeting is two-fold” said Mayor John Soubasi, addressing Brooklawn Fire Department and Emergency Management Services (EMS) members during the Council meeting. “One reason is so that members may hear directly from us. Also, by meeting face to face, we feel is the best way to dispel rumors,” Soubasis said. “I’d like to make it clear that for the last 12 years we have not micro-managed any groups. We know that the EMS squad always needed a home,” he said in answer to rumors that a building slated for that purpose has not been completed. “In dealing with (former) Assemblyman Joe Roberts, discretionary funds became available for use in erecting a...

Commentary by Hank F. Miller Jr. A frustrated North Korea is once again, this time lashing out with a deadly volley of artillery aimed at reminding rival South Korea -- and the world--that it will not be ignored. The barrage of shots fired Tuesday at a South Korean island laying within sight of its shores did not come out of nowhere. For weeks, North Korea has been angling for credit for reaching out to the U.S. and South Korea, and has warned that cool response would come at a cost. The destruction that set homes ablaze, sent islanders fleeing for underground shelters and killed two South Korean Marines and two civilians may have been more than Pyongyang bargained for in its game of chicken with the South. But it gets attention, which is what Pyongyang wants as it seeks to restart negotiations to barter its nuclear program for much-needed aid and...

Commentary by Hank F. Miller Jr. Japan typically digs in it' heels against outside customs. To win acceptance here such customs must first measure up to Japan's high standard of cultural attainment. Which means ... they gotta make money. Thus, through the years Japan has been trampled over by Western cows like Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day. Such customs, or rather the Japanese versions of such, have brought smiles to countless young children and romantic couples and at the same time have given Japanese merchandisers reason to live. And live very well I must say. So we see Halloween masks being marketed in mid-September, Christmas trees adorning storefronts from late October and Valentine hearts decorating isles and counters long after New Year's. If you don't know better, you might think we were all trapped inside a giant Walmart. Yet one of the few Western holidays--specifically American holidays-- that has never...

By Leigh Anne Hubbs Gloucester City News Superintendent Joe Rafferty said Mount Ephraim has submitted its application for School Choice (Interdistrict Public School Choice Program Act) during last week’s Board of Education meeting. This program gives parents the option of sending their children to participating schools outside of their home district. Even if a school district does not participate, it still must choose between allowing up to 10 percent per grade level or 15 percent of total population to enroll in School Choice districts. School Board members voted to limit the number to 10 percent per grade. Rafferty said that if Mt. Ephraim participates, tuition from districts sending their students to this district could be an alternative revenue source, and that he would love to see programs brought back and more specials in the curriculum. Residents at the meeting expressed concerns that Mt. Ephraim could lose up to 10 percent...

Albert J. Countryman Jr. Gloucester City News Election Analysis Gloucester City Democrats swept the recent General Election, despite big wins for Republicans nationwide. Also, Democratic state candidates in District Five won easily, and the party retained complete control of the Camden County Board of Freeholders. All the candidates made campaign promises to help Gloucester City to develop its Delaware River waterfront as a way to attract tourists and new businesses, and to breathe life into a City that had started dying after the loss of industrial jobs in the 1960s and 70s. Since that time, various development plans have been proposed – including Hollywood East and building more than 800 homes in Southport. But, the waterfront still looks a bit desolate. Perhaps City Council, the Freeholders, State Senator Donald W. Norcross and State Assemblyman Gilbert L. “Whip” Wilson can come up with a plan together, apply for federal stimulus funds,...

BY BILL CLEARY Looking at the November election returns posted on the Camden County and Gloucester County websites one things stands out. Gloucester City is the only community still using the Ward system in this immediate area. For several years I along with others have been urging Mayor and Council to change Gloucester City’s out-dated form of government. The present system limits the chance of finding qualified residents who have an interest in serving in City government to run for office. The Wards system makes it even more difficult, as the candidate must live in that Ward to be able to serve in our form of government. Earlier this year Mayor William James appointed an Advisory Committee to study the issue and make recommendations to change it. Besides the Mayor, the committee consisted of former Gloucester City mayor Robert Bevan, former Gloucester City mayor Walt Jost, Board of Education president...

Caffeinated alcoholic beverages, or CABs, are alcoholic beverages that contain caffeine as an additive and are packaged in combined form. Alcoholic beverages to which caffeine has been added as a separate ingredient have raised health concerns at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as in other federal, state, and local agencies. On Nov. 17, 2010, FDA announced that it had sent warning letters to four companies that make malt versions of these beverages, advising them that the caffeine included as a separate ingredient is an “unsafe food additive." These warning letters were not directed at alcoholic beverages that only contain caffeine as a natural constituent of one or more of their ingredients, such as a coffee flavoring. A Troubling Mix According to data and expert opinion, caffeine can mask sensory cues that people may rely on to determine how intoxicated they are. This means that individuals drinking these...

Related: NJ Senator Lautenberg worth $100 million plus The Center for Responsive Politics Press release By Communications on November 17, 2010 WASHINGTON — Members of Congress are enjoying their own financial stimulus. Despite a stubbornly sour national economy congressional members’ personal wealth collectively increased by more than 16 percent between 2008 and 2009, according to a new study by the Center for Responsive Politics of federal financial disclosures released earlier this year. And while some members’ financial portfolios lost value, no need to bemoan most lawmakers’ financial lot: Nearly half of them -- 261 -- are millionaires, a slight increase from the previous year, the Center’s study finds. That compares to about 1 percent of Americans who lay claim to the same lofty fiscal status. And of these congressional millionaires, 55 have an average calculated wealth in 2009 of $10 million or more, with eight in the $100 million-plus range....

By Chris Concannon Gloucester City News Two members of Bellmawr’s EMS Unit were honored with citations at the recent Bellmawr Borough Council meeting. Bellmawr Fire Chief Jim Burleigh presented the awards to Michael Cox Jr. and Charles “CJ” Ruff. They were honored for saving the life of Joseph Toomey, who went into cardiac arrest August 4. Cox and Ruff responded to Mr. Toomey’s home and, using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), re-started his heart function. Then, they took him to a local hospital. A very thankful Toomey was at the meeting for the presentation. Well-known to residents, he is a retired Bellmawr Sewer Director. EMS Supervisor Chuck Hannum said this was one of three cardiac saves within the past year, which is unheard of in the EMS community. He said Bellmawr EMS’s response time has improved by 9 percent. In other news, a thank you card was read from the...

Citizens of Gloucester City, There is no shortage of citizens with good ideas about how to improve our city. There is no shortage of citizens who are looking for a way forward, looking for a path to change. But there is a shortage of leaders that are offering a way forward that is based on the long-term interests of the city. The lack of a path forward is wasting those good ideas and risks imperiling Gloucester City. The Combined Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Board is currently writing a new Gloucester City Master Plan. A Master Plan is supposed to reflect the community’s vision and long-term interests. A Master Plan outlines problems and proposes solutions for healthy, viable, and desired growth. Such an endeavor should keep citizens informed about the process and involve them in the solutions; after all, it is our city. Master Plans and zoning laws were invented to...

Along the Mediterranean coast of France, in the city of Montpellier, prosecutors are quietly putting on trial an ancient French tradition — the fishing and trading of the majestic Eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna, a sushi delicacy sold in restaurants from New York to Tokyo. The still-secret proceedings accuse some of France’s most prominent fishing masters of illegally catching several hundred tons of the prized bluefin, a fish so severely plundered in the Mediterranean that this year it was proposed for listing as an endangered species alongside panda bears. Bluefin tuna is one of the sea’s most valuable species, a highly migratory fish that can weigh more than 500 kilograms and live 40 years. One large fish can fetch more than $100,000 in Japan, which consumes around 80 percent of the global bluefin market. The widely hunted bluefin has also become a bellwether, the latest threatened species in a feeding frenzy...

TIPS AND SNIPPETS By Bill Cleary Yo! Bill Have You Heard This One? You have to wonder sometimes where the people who start the rumors that float around Gloucester City get their information. And why don’t they approach our public officials for the answer (s) instead of spreading the gossip all over town before they know if it is true or not? Privately I am told some individuals fear retaliation from the power brokers in our City especially those who have city jobs. Another reason could be they don’t trust politicians to tell the truth be they local, county, state or federal so why bother to ask a question. In an effort to clear up the latest rumors I asked Mayor Bill James if it was true that he was going to resign and the Democrat Club would name Councilman Nick Marchese to the position. Also circulating over ClearysNoteBook this...

Rowan Boulevard’s Developer, Sora Holdings, Working With Mayor and Council To Upgrade Fire Department Equipment Glassboro, NJ, November 9, 2010 ---- The fire protection and safety of the Glassboro community will receive a major gift in early December, as Sora Holdings, the developer of the borough’s $300 million Rowan Boulevard downtown revitalization project, donates a new aerial ladder truck to the Glassboro Fire Department. “This is an excellent example of how a public-private partnership benefits the community. We have been discussing with Sora the need to upgrade our existing fleet of fire trucks, especially with the height of some of the new Rowan Boulevard buildings, and Sora’s generous donation enables us to do this at no expense to the taxpayers,” said Glassboro Mayor Leo McCabe. For Sora, the donation represents being a good neighbor. According to Greg Filipek and Tom Fore, the principals of Sora Holdings, the designated master redeveloper...

By Paul Racette, Watershed Programs Manager, Pennsylvania Environmental Council The tidal Delaware River, like many urban rivers, is undergoing a 21st century transformation thanks to the creation ofgreenways, parks, and trails along waterfronts long dominated by indus- trial enterprises. The Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) is leading an effort to identify ecological restoration opportunities along the North Philadelphia waterfront. The East Coast Greenway, a multi-use recreational trail that will run from Maine to Florida, is being stitched together through this riverfront reach. Focusing on areas between the trail and the river, PEC and its partners have assessed restora- tion opportunities across the upland, riverbank, and tidal wetland areas. PEC coordinates an urban waterfront workgroup under the umbrella of the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary’s Regional Restoration Initiative. The workgroup developed and applied habitat, site-wide, and recreational criteria to prioritize restoration oppor- tunities. Results of this assessment are documented in the November...

By Anthony Wojtkowiak Gloucester City News The Planning Board agreed that the Gloucester City Library should not be relocated during a special meeting October 27 to discuss the Master Plan. Library Director Elizabeth Egan, one of five City officials to give presentations during the meeting, told board members that the space and location of the present library are inadequate. “When I came to the directorship of the Gloucester City Library in 1989, we were serving 42,000 people a year. In the last three years we have averaged 83,582 people,” she said. Alternate Board Member Elena King challenged the need for a bigger library, suggesting the library might instead invest in an Amazon Kindle and purchase e-books to save space. When asked about the best location for a future library, Egan said that the former Coast Guard building on the Delaware River waterfront would be an ideal place. The Planning Board...

Mayor William James and Gloucester City Council approved the transfer of the plenary, retail consumption license during last week’s meeting. The license was transferred from the Auld Dubliner at 157 S. Burlington Street to Louis J. Faragasso Jr., and the mayor wished the new owners good luck. Faragasso said he is looking forward to serving the customers, plans to make definite improvements, and hopes to open by late November. James asked Farragasso to tell the story of how he decided to come into the City and establish his business here. “It was through the need to follow a detour through the City, and my friend and I thought this would be a great place for a...

As a resident and citizen for 20 years, I observed first-hand at a recent Borough Council meeting the apparent lack of leadership in Bellmawr. I received a flyer in the mail from another Bellmawr citizen listing concerns about the speed limits not being observed on both Creek and Browning roads. As a father of three children, I thought it was a good idea to attend the meeting to see what may come out of the meeting. Well, I was mistaken and displeased at what I observed and heard at the Council meeting I attended on October 21. I was disappointed in the Mayor and Council’s performance. At a certain point, I had to ask a question since I was displeased at what I was hearing. I asked what other measures Council was looking at. For instance, are you looking at reallocating resources within the Police Department to patrol peak times...

HUNTING AND FISHING NEWS compiled by CNBNews.Net Grizzly versus Bison: the rest of the story | KRTV.com | Great Falls, Montana Alex Wypyszinski had just dropped off his wife at work and had a few hours to kill one morning last April. Wypyszinski says he likes to spend his free time in the morning snapping photos of wildlife in the park. Of course, he usually has to search the animals out. It all started when he was driving in the Fountain Flats area, located between the Madison Junction and Old Faithful, when he heard an unusual sound. But Wypyszinski says any noise is unusual on that particular highway at 7am. "I thought it was a horse and carriage," said Wypyszinski. "That was the kind of noise that I heard." By the time he turned around, the two fuzzy brown images were racing quickly toward him. Wypyszinski pulled out his camera...
