October 25, 2010

A Teaneck Township police officer was killed early this morning after his cruiser PoliceBadge-Mourning hit a utility pole, according to The Record.

Officer John Abraham was pronounced dead at Holy Name Medical Center following the single-vehicle crash at approximately 2 a.m.

Abraham was responding to a call at the time of the incident, Chief Robert Wilson told the newspaper.

The 37-year-old joined the force in 1994 and previously worked as a detective but asked to return to patrol.

"He was one of these guys who was all about being a cop," Wilson said. "He loved being a cop. John always wanted to be in the middle of it."

He is survived by his wife, Martha, and young son, Jake.

Officer Gerry Rosano told the newspaper that Abraham was a devoted to his family and put the well-being of his son -- who is autistic -- first.

"Even though he put on a tough exterior, he was a family man," he said. "Having an autistic child is hard, but he had a lot of patience."

The fatal accident unit of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the crash.
