Scotty Mathurin (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) is a junior defensive back for the Lions football squad. Mathurin is a criminlogy major and has provided relief to those who suffered hardships following the 2009 earthquake in Haiti.

Question: What is the discussion and/or vibe amongst players as you head into challenge of the 2010 season?

Scotty Mathurin:
The biggest vibe amongst the players is to keep the tempo up. Over the last two years one could say that we lacked of intensity at times. This year we are going to be more aggressive and loud!

Q: What has been your individual focus on the field in preparing for this season?

SM: My individual focus on the field this year is to become more of a leader. I want to expand my energy to not only the guys that will see the field, but also to the guys who will be on the sideline cheering us on.

Q: What runs through your mind about the 82-yard kickoff return touchdown in the season opener
against Buffalo State at Lions’ Stadium last year?

SM: When I returned a kick-off for an 82 yard TD run, I was feeling at my best. I didn’t feel like I could get any better. However, I was wrong. We've all trained to be faster, bigger, and stronger this year, and my entire mind is in the right place. So, 82 yards is now a goal I want to pass.

Q: What is your dietary intake the day before and then morning of a football game?

SM: This is a very interesting question, because I love to eat what ever I want. However, I do tend to stay away from anything heavy and anything that may cause problems during the game.

Q: What is latest regarding your involvement with Haiti relief and how are your relatives coping?

SM: Besides donations and fundraisers, my latest involvement with the Haiti relief branches straight from my family. My family has funded my aunt and brother to fly over to Haiti to help cope with needs of my relatives and people of Haiti. My family and I are very optimistic through faith that god will help those in need.

Q: What has been your favorite class at TCNJ and why? How about your most difficult?

SM: My favorite class in TCNJ is Moral Contemporary Issues. The class challenged my morals, values, beliefs. The most difficult class I took is hands down, introduction to Logic.

Q: In your opinion, what occurrence, change, or achievement would provide Americans with a boost of national pride?

SM: The nation would gain more pride if the were more achievements in peace and equality. To further extend a hand out to suffering countries besides Haiti would show to the world that the United States can further care for every suffering person of the world. Also, giving more rights and protections to the groups of people being discriminated against would help unite the nation.

Q: If coach Eric Hamilton is getting himself ready for a night out, what musical artist or group do you imagine is playing in the background and why?

SM: This is a great question. I could really only imagine coach Ham listening to his own vocal music in his head, while he focuses on being on time. But if I must pick an artist, I would choose Elvis. I would put money that coach Ham is an Elvis man
