September 10, 2010, Philadelphia- Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced Campus Philly’s appointment of a new president, Dr. Deborah Diamond. She will begin her new post on October 4, 2010 to take over the leadership of Jon Herrmann, who departed the organization in June, 2010. Dr. Diamond was previously the director of research and strategy at the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC).
Incorporated in 2004, Campus Philly is a 501(c)3 nonprofit economic development organization fueling economic growth by encouraging college students to study, explore, live and work in the Philadelphia region. Campus Philly’s role in the region’s economic development strategy is structured around three programmatic areas: attracting more students to Greater Philadelphia schools, engaging students in the cultural and civic life of the region and retaining students after they graduate.
“Campus Philly is playing a vital role in helping our City reach the goal of doubling the college degree attainment rate for Philadelphia’s residents,” said Mayor Nutter. “Dr.Diamond’s dynamic background will prove useful as she develops fresh ideas with various stakeholders for spurring new generations of college graduates who choose to make Philadelphia their home.”
The Campus Philly Board chose Dr. Diamond after an extensive search. “Deborah showed us that she was a thoughtful leader, a great manager and planner, and has an incredibly strong track record of creative thinking and strategic planning that leads to impressive results,” said Carol de Fries, Campus Philly Board Chair and Vice President of Market Development at PIDC. Combined with her strong academic and research background, we felt Deborah would enable Campus Philly to grow, raise its organizational profile and expand its services and impact.”
Dr. Diamond serves as a Senior Consultant at the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania and has taught at Bryn Mawr College and Columbia University. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College and a Masters Degree and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago. She was Vice President of The Melior Group, a Philadelphia-based research and consulting firm before moving to GPTMC to create and lead their department of research and strategy. For the past year and a half, she has served as a research and policy consultant to numerous regional civic and economic development groups including Campus Philly, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and Select Greater Philadelphia.
