Posted by Michael Steel on September 08, 2010 Instead of working to help the American people - who are asking, ‘where are the jobs?’ - President Obama flew to Cleveland, Ohio today to attack an economic speech that House Republican Leader Boehner made there on August 24. It probably would have helped if the President (or his aides) had read Boehner’s speech beforehand. Instead, President Obama’s claimed that Republican Leader Boehner’s speech in Cleveland offered no new ideas – which simply isn’t true. In addition to stopping Washington Democrats’ plan to raise taxes on American families and small businesses on Jan. 1 (and suggesting that the President could use better economic advisors), Boehner’s speech included a number of new policy proposals: repealing the job-killing 1099 provision in ObamaCare, a specific $1.3 trillion spending reduction package put together by Budget Ranking Member Paul Ryan, Rep. Geoff Davis’ ‘REINS Act’ – which...

Bill Hillman captured this ph oto of what he believes are two hawks visiting Old Saint Mary cemetery recently located at St. Mary and Market Street, Gloucester City. The photo doesn’t show the face of the birds or the color under their wings. As such it makes it hard to identify the exact species of hawk. A red-tailed hawk is native to New Jersy and has more brown coloring according to the photo found at Wikipedia. I think these birds look more like turkey buzzards. How about some input from our readers that are bird watchers. Thanks Bill for the photos. ~Bill Cleary Related articles by Zemanta Bald Eagle Take Out (Red-Tailed Hawk) (biodiversivist.blogspot.com) Hunting and Fishing: Blue Collar Conservation, Feral Hogs, (gloucestercitynews.net)

By Mark Matthews No, we are not getting an infusion of new cash… but looks like we are getting 2 new businesses with a "Dollar" theme! A discount variety store has opened this week, and coming up next is a discount supermarket! Just opened this week at the Browning Square shopping center is Dollar General. It is located in the center of the old Super Fresh building, with Retro Fitness to the right. Despite what you would think based on the name, Dollar General is not a dollar store. They are general merchandise store. From their website “From brand-name grocery items, to apparel and household décor, to a wide variety of health and beauty items for the entire family, Dollar General Market has everything you need, all at prices designed to save you more” I’ve been to the Runnemede store in the past, and it reminded me a little of...

Dear Resident: On behalf of the Gloucester City Police Department, I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer vacation. It is now time for a new school season with many new students going to school for the first time. We want to wish those new students well and most importantly we want them all to get to and from school safely. We are asking the motoring public to be mindful of the new laws regarding pedestrians in the cross walks and we also want the pedestrians to be aware of the proper locations to cross. All motorists must now stop completely for any pedestrian who is within a legal crosswalk. Failure to stop for a pedestrian can subject the motorist to a traffic citation. Likewise all pedestrians must use a crosswalk to cross the street. It is not permitted to cross the street in the middle of the...

This is the story ...... of our Mothers and Grandmothers who lived only 90 years ago. Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote. The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.' They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart...

By Bill Evans - NJ.com Zach Braddock made the major leagues at the young age of 22, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a long road for the left-handed pitcher from Gloucester Catholic. He underwent Tommy John surgery between his junior and senior high school seasons and faced injury problems that limited his time on the mound in the first few years of his professional career. But in the last two years after starting the 2008 season in A-ball, Braddock has shot up through the Milwaukee Brewers' minor league system, making his major-league debut in May. He arrived in Philadelphia a short ride over the Walt Whitman Bridge from where he played his high school and legion ball on Friday looking forward to the chance to pitch in front of friends and family. "It's why I went to high school where I did," said Braddock. "I wanted the smaller school,...

by Shelly Banjo The Wall Street Journal...- WSJ.com Mr. Lowry realized that the group of women, many of whom are in their 80s and 90s, needed more than just legal help: He and other residents of Barrington and Bellmawr, N.J. formed a charitable organization called Daughters for the Daughters of our Lady of the Sacred Heart with the goal of raising enough money to provide for the nuns for the duration of their lives. The first step was to install an elevator in the convent: Since the nuns' sleeping quarters were on the top floor, many of the older women could no longer easily climb three flights of stairs multiple times a day to eat and pray. Mr. Lowry enlisted volunteers and businesses from around the community to raise nearly $70,000 for the convent's restoration and senior-living retrofitting. Area companies like Allied Elevator LLC., based in Pennsauken, N.J. and the...

- pressofAtlanticCity.com September 4 SEA ISLE CITY — A black family who complained city school officials kept a child out of a Christmas play received $120,000 in settlement money Friday. Anecqua Joyce’s family claimed in a 2004 federal lawsuit that school officials excluded Anecqua, then 9, from a 2003 holiday program because she was black. Doretha Waters-Rice, her son Glendon Durham and Anecqua sued the city’s school district and its police department over the incident. The city’s insurance fund paid Anecqua and her family $550,000 in July to settle their claims that police violated the family’s civil rights when they wrongly arrested Waters-Rice, Anecqua’s grandmother, after she complained about the child’s exclusion. The most recent settlement, approved Friday by a U.S. District Court judge, involves the family’s claims against school officials. Hi Bill, My name is Todd Roberts. I have been a Gloucester City resident all my life. I went through the Gloucester City public school system (Brown Street, Mary Ethel, Gloucester High Valedictorian, class of 2003). I attended New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ, from 2003-2007, where I earned a BS in Information Technology with a concentration in Management Information Systems and a minor in Management. I was a member of the Albert Dorman Honors College, and I graduated Magna Cum Laude. I now make my home in Gloucester Heights with my wife Dana, also a life-long resident of Gloucester City and 2003 graduate of Gloucester High. About a year ago I came up with the idea to create a website where the public could vote on user-submitted stories to determine guilt or innocence. I was attracted by the public’s unbiased, outside-looking-in perspective. I wanted to provide a...
