George J. Pyffer Jr., formerly of Gloucester City, Vietnam Navy Veteran, Member of Pipefitter Local 322 George J. Pyffer, Jr., 64, of Estell Manor, passed away suddenly at his home on September 27, 2010. Raised in Gloucester City, George served in the U.S. Navy for four years during Vietnam. After the service he started out as a pipefitter at the U.S. Navy Yard in Philadelphia, and was a 30 year member of Local 322. He was also the owner of Custom Seamless Gutters of Ocean City for several years. George was an avid rider and one of the founding members of the Accelerators. FALL BOW SEASON BEGINS OCT. 2 New Jersey's regular Fall Bow deer hunting season kicks off statewide on Saturday, October 2 and extends through October 29. This season, Garden State bow hunters will benefit from another important regulation change, which comes on the heels of two changes implemented last season that significantly expanded bow hunting opportunities in our state. The expansion of bow hunting opportunities in New Jersey is gaining wide recognition through Whitetail Journal magazine, which recently chose the Garden State as one of the top five crossbow deer hunting states in the nation. By Leigh Anne Hubbs NEWS Correspondent The Mt. Ephraim Board of Education voted 6-1 to stop charging for preschool during last week’s meeting. In the spring, members had voted to begin charging regular education preschool students $3,260 for the 2010-11 school year as a way to raise funds after state aid was reduced. Under state law, districts are required to provide free preschool for special education students. The main reason members suggested to discontinue charging tuition was because there were 42 students enrolled in 2009-10, and only 13 this year. Of those 13, only five are regular education students that are paying tuition. Board members said the rate of $3,260 for five days a week of half-day preschool is not competitive with other preschools/day cares in the area. The Borough of Audubon tax bills are being mailed out this week. Tax payments are due on Monday, November 1st, 2010. There is a 10 day grace period after which interest will begin to accrue. The tax office accepts cash, checks as well as credit cards. ** The final budget was adopted which provides for a $40 DECREASE in the estimated amount originally sent out for the August payment. By Chris Concannon NEWS Correspondent The morning silence along Bell Road in Mt. Ephraim September 13 was broken around 7 a.m. by the sound of a running backhoe, as demolition began on the Mt. Ephraim Fire Department’s (Station 45) Bell Road Station. Station 45 Chief Brian Gilmore said the $3 million project, which they hope to have completed by mid- 2011 (weather permitting), also included a vacant home adjacent to the rear of the firehouse property. Gilmore said they, along with the Borough of Mt. Ephraim, purchased the home in 2003. The original building was built around 1927. Sacred Heart Church, now on Kings Highway, originally held services there. A second section for the ball-room was added in 1964. Firefighter Ryan Seitz, 26, died when a cap on a pressurized water tank flew off and struck him at approximately 6 p.m., the report said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. McArthur responded with a dozen other agencies to extinguish a brush fire in Liberty Township. Firefighter Aaron Chesser -- also from McArthur -- was transported to hospital. Hus, 21, a lifelong resident of Audubon, who passed away suddenly on September 4, 2010. Matthew was a 2008 graduate of Audubon High School where he played on the football team. He worked for Carpenter’s Union Local 393 in Gloucester City where he has been involved for over a year with the construction of the new Virtua Hospital in Voorhees. Brian Morrell, "The incident involved a 16 -year- old male, a Gloucester City resident. The accident happened at 3:40 pm at George Street and the Railroad.
