PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is urging mariners to heed warnings as Hurricane Earl is expected to affect the mid-Atlantic region between North Carolina and New Jersey Thursday and Friday. As Earl approaches, the Coast Guard urges people to be mindful of the following safety messages: - Anticipate bridge closures. By Sally Martino NEWS Correspondent Brooklawn Council President Theresa Branella conducted last week’s meeting in the absence of Mayor John Soubasis. Council heard a presentation from Fire Code Inspector Carl Thomas regarding a new rapid key entry box system that will be available for installation at the school, community center and local businesses for the cost of the box. A lockbox with the entry key would be placed near the front entrance or another convenient place that would allow easy access to a burning building by the emergency personnel. “This system will make it easier and faster for firemen to enter a building, especially if there is a fire in the middle of the night, and may eliminate broken doors and windows to allow access,” Thomas said. The keys to the boxes, with serial numbers for Brooklawn only, would be held by the Fire Department, and also kept in a...

By Mark Matthews A new Gas Station is moving in: We lovingly remember the spot next to Ponzio’s as the home of the Gino Giant when Gino’s was a regional hamburger and chicken fast food restaurant. Then it spent many years as a Roy Rogers restaurant. (Are they still on the Turnpike or Expressway?). Then a few years ago one of our favorite eating places became an Amoco gas Station… but then quickly closed. Well the “closed more than open” gas station has gotten freshly painted, and the pumps are bearing the logo of its newest tenant. The much loved BP Oil is opening up soon! With the leak in the gulf finally plugged, will you be making the new BP Oil a regular stop? Now remember, most of these stations are owned by independent business people who have nothing to do with polluting the gulf. Comments, your thoughts. Gino’s...

By Kim Gamel / Associated Press KHAN BANI SAAD, Iraq – A $40 million prison sits in the desert north of Baghdad, empty. A $165 million children's hospital goes unused in the south. A $100 million waste water treatment system in Fallujah has cost three times more than projected, yet sewage still runs through the streets. As the U.S. draws down in Iraq, it is leaving behind hundreds of abandoned or incomplete projects. More than $5 billion in American taxpayer funds has been wasted — more than 10 percent of the some $50 billion the U.S. has spent on reconstruction in Iraq, according to audits from a U.S. watchdog agency. That amount is likely an underestimate, based on an analysis of more than 300 reports by auditors with the special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction. And it does not take into account security costs, which have run almost 17 percent...

Street I am deeply concerned by the recent revelations regarding Philadelphia Housing Authority Executive Director Carl Greene and by the Board’s oversight of the organization. I know that many Philadelphians share this concern and deserve answers to the many questions that have been raised. The City of Philadelphia will provide any help and support requested by HUD.” Mayor Nutter, in an August 25, 2010, letter to John F. Street, Chairman of...

August 30, 2010 | House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) Under the headline “Obama touts positive Iraq news in radio address,” The Washington Post reported this weekend that President Obama is shifting focus to Iraq in “an effort to celebrate good news” amid a slew of bad economic headlines and touting “his own role in making good on a campaign pledge.” However, the fact is that the transition he is celebrating was only made possible by the implementation of the surge he opposed prior to his election as president. At the time the surge was announced, then-Sen. Obama, along with then-Sen. Biden and top Congressional Democrats, opposed the new plan. In remarks given immediately after the strategy was laid out, then-Sen. Obama said, “I am not persuaded that 20,000 additional troops in Iraq is going to solve the sectarian violence there. In fact, I think it will do the reverse.”...

Image via Wikipedia Bed bugs are becoming increasingly common and are starting to show up in more places than nasty hotel rooms. Just last week, a woman reported being bitten at the AMC Empire 25 theater in Times Square and experts warn that they’re on the rise in cities across the US. We talked to Changlu Wang, an urban entomologist at Rutgers who specializes in urban pest control, for the scoop on the bed bug situation in Philly and what we can all do to avoid becoming a nighttime buffet. Q: What is the bed bug situation in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia right now? Do we have it as bad as other states? A: Just like any in other major city, I think the cases are increasing, slowly but steadily. The number of cases will be increasing in the next decade or maybe longer. Q: Why are they on the rise?...

By Mark Matthews By this time everyone knows the Brooklawn K-Mart is closing. The store is PACKED with shoppers. My wife was there on a Friday night and said every register was open! I was tempted to drive over to witness it! If all it took was to knock 20% off of everything to pack the store, why didn’t they do it years ago? J Walmart continues to grow and in my opinion definitely squeezed the life out of our K-Mart (or K-mart continues to let things slip to a level that consumers choose to drive a little further for other shopping options). But Walmart is not done. Opening this fall is ANOTHER Walmart for our area, at the Somerdale Plaza. Most of us know the center simply for its Cinemark Movie Theater and a bunch of failed and empty stores. Walmart has been planning and building this location for...

By Bill Cleary A number of questions arose following the article I wrote recently on Community Pride. For example how many rental properties are there in Gloucester City? Who are the biggest landlords? A request to the City Housing Office for those answers required an OPRA form to be submitted to the City Clerk. Ten days later I was handed a 46 page list that contained the names of the landlords and the addresses of the rental properties for 2010. In July I had asked City Administrator Jack Lipsett for a list of all the vacant lots in Gloucester City. He said recently that he was still working on compiling that information. Looking over the Housing Office documents one notices immediately that there are entire blocks of rentals that have taken over neighborhoods located on the west side of Broadway. In fact on the west side of town from Broadway...

Statement From NRA-PVF Chairman Chris W. Cox On The 2010 Nevada U.S. Senate Race In the coming days and weeks, the NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) will be announcing endorsements and candidate ratings in hundreds of federal races, as well as thousands of state legislative races. Unless these announcements are required by the timing of primary or special elections, the NRA-PVF generally does not issue endorsements while important legislative business is pending. The NRA-PVF also operates under a long-standing policy that gives preference to incumbent candidates who have voted with the NRA on key issues, which is explained in more detail here. The U.S. Senate recently considered a number of issues important to NRA members, including the confirmation of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. Out of respect for the confirmation process, the NRA did not announce its position on Ms. Kagan's confirmation until the conclusion of her testimony before...

by Jon McMenamin The Rowan University women’s volleyball team has many new faces in 2010. Among the Profs’ 15 players there are three veterans and 12 rookies. Last season, Rowan finished with a 13-17 overall record and a 4-4 conference mark. The Profs advanced to the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament for the third straight year. “This year we are taller, quicker and more athletic,” said head coach Libby Ranero. “We are more experienced and have a larger group of players. Ironically, in the past few seasons we have been strong defensively. This year, we are strong offensively with a lot of power and if we have a weakness, it is defense.” The Profs have a solid group of veterans returning. To the students and faculty of our high school: I am your new principal, and honored to be so. There is no greater calling than to teach young people. I would like to apprise you of some important changes coming to our school. I am making these changes because I am convinced that most of the ideas that have dominated public education in America have worked against you, against your teachers, and against our country. The data are necessary for predicting future fishery trends and harvest potential. Over the years a total of 76 different species have been identified, with the five most abundant being bay anchovy, Atlantic croaker, weakfish, blue crab and Atlantic herring. Several displays were available for people to see, courtesy of the Bellmawr Fire Department, Zone 5 (Police) Tactical Task Force, as well as Camden County Canteen 2. Many police officers, firefighters and EMTs were standing by to answer any questions posed them by those in attendance. Mister Softee handed out free ice cream, compliments of the Bellmawr Democrat Club. Hot dogs, pretzels and other refreshments, were available...
