PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is urging mariners to heed warnings as Hurricane Earl is expected to affect the mid-Atlantic region between North Carolina and New Jersey Thursday and Friday. As Earl approaches, the Coast Guard urges people to be mindful of the following safety messages: - Anticipate bridge closures. Mariners are advised that during strong storms drawbridges along the coast may deviate from the normal operating procedures. Drawbridges are authorized to remain closed upon the approach of gale force winds or higher as stated in the Code of Federal Regulations 117.35, which applies to “natural disasters or civil disorders.” Mariners should anticipate bridge closures by listening to the National Weather Service and Coast Guard broadcasts on the storm conditions. Council heard a presentation from Fire Code Inspector Carl Thomas regarding a new rapid key entry box system that will be available for installation at the school, community center and local businesses for the cost of the box. A lockbox with the entry key would be placed near the front entrance or another convenient place that would allow easy access to a burning building by the emergency personnel. “This system will make it easier and faster for firemen to enter a building, especially if there is a fire in the middle of the night, and may eliminate broken doors and windows to allow access,” Thomas said. A $100 million waste water treatment system in Fallujah has cost three times more than projected, yet sewage still runs through the streets. As the U.S. draws down in Iraq, it is leaving behind hundreds of abandoned or incomplete projects. More than $5 billion in American taxpayer funds has been wasted — more than 10 percent of the some $50 billion the U.S. has spent on reconstruction in Iraq, according to audits from a U.S. watchdog agency. Bishop Joseph Galante formally announced today, August 27th, that two new parishes will be established on September 29, 2010 through the consolidation of five existing parishes. The announcement establishing the new parishes was made in two formal decrees, which were published in the August 27th edition of the Catholic Star Herald. St. Clare of Assisi Parish will be established through the consolidation of St. John the Evangelist in Paulsboro, St. Joseph in Swedesboro, and St. Michael in Gibbstown. Sunday, August 29, 2010 - Bellmawr — Two weeks before the ninth anniversary of 9/11, firefighters lined up on highway overpasses Saturday to salute a motorcade escorting steel beams recovered from the World Trade Center to Arlington, Va. Who are the biggest landlords? A request to the City Housing Office for those answers required an OPRA form to be submitted to the City Clerk. Ten days later I was handed a 46 page list that contained the names of the landlords and the addresses of the rental properties for 2010. In July I had asked City Administrator Jack Lipsett for a list of all the vacant lots in Gloucester City. He said recently that he was still working on compiling that information. Eric Fetterolf, former project coordinator of Redevelopment in the Gloucester City Community Development Office, died yesterday (August 28. 2010) of a apparent heart attack. Delaware Bay Marine Study NJDEP's Division of Fish & Wildlife's Bureau of Marine Fisheries biologists conduct several surveys each year to study the status of species populations in the Delaware Estuary. One of these surveys is the Delaware Bay Finfish Trawl Survey. The data collected in these surveys allow biologists to develop abundance estimates and length frequencies of estuarine dependent finfish. The data are necessary for predicting future fishery trends and harvest potential. Over the years a total of 76 different species have been identified, with the five most abundant being bay anchovy, Atlantic croaker, weakfish, blue crab and Atlantic herring. August 26 TRENTON * The DEP has brokered an agreement that enables the Camden Redevelopment Agency to use dredged materials from a State-owned facility along the Delaware River in Palmyra to redevelop a Camden landfill as a multimillion-dollar Salvation Army community center, Commissioner Bob Martin announced today. The work is made possible by agreements reached with National Amusements, the Burlington County Bridge Commission and the borough of Palmyra, and by the approval of the Burlington County Board of Freeholders. She died on September 20, 2009, and was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery -- in the crypt (I-E-54) where the Virgin Mary watches over her. Firefighter Douglas Farrington, who was also the president of the department, responded to the station to man a backup engine as the fire company responded to a barn fire in Peach Bottom Township in York County, Pa. Part of an ever-growing nationwide effort to educate the public on ways to prevent crime in their neighborhoods, Bellmawr’s version was hosted, as always, by the Bellmawr Police Department. The weather conditions were very favorable, as a light breeze kept everyone cool – a marked change from the incinerator-like heat and humidity of past Night Out events. Monday, August 23, 2010 - Late Monday night, Rescue 32, Ladder 33, & Battalion 303 (Kibler) assisted neighboring Barrington FD with a working fire at 139 Woodland Avenue. Battalion 91 (Houck) arrived with fire showing from a 2 story single family dwelling w/ reports of people trapped.
