Stevens Athletics Finishes 2009-10 Ranked 38th in Directors’ Cup Standings

Pine Grove Tower Ad HOBOKEN, N.J. (June 29, 2010) - The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) released its final 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, and Stevens Institute of Technology came in at No. 38. The ranking matches the best-ever finish in program history, previously achieved after the 2008-09 school year. Stevens totaled 380.5 points, which is an all-time high as total of 311 NCAA Division III Colleges and Universities were ranked with Williams College winning its fifth-straight Directors’ Cup.

Stevens finished second among all technology-based institutions (Massachusetts Institute of Technology – No. 11), and second in the state of New Jersey (The College of New Jersey – No. 8). Ithaca College was the only school from the Empire 8 to finish higher than Stevens, coming in at No. 22.

Stevens earned 114.00 points after the fall season with field hockey, men’s soccer, and women’s volleyball all earning points. Men’s swimming, women’s swimming, wrestling tallied 163.50 points in the winter, while women’s lacrosse and women’s outdoor track and field combined for 103.00 points in the spring.

"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff and all of the hard work they put in during the 2009-2010 year, said Director of Athletics Russell Rogers. “Placing 38th in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup for the second consecutive year shows we have the ability to sustain our success and puts Stevens Athletics in the company of some outstanding institutions and athletic programs."

The Stevens athletic program was first ranked after the 2000-01 school year and broke into the top-100 in 2003-04 at No. 77. Stevens finished 2004-05 ranked 46th in the country to burst into the top-50.

“I am extraordinarily proud that Stevens is one of the top ranked technological universities in the Directors’ Cup listing,” said Stevens Vice President Dr. Maureen Weatherall. “It speaks well of our scholar-athletes, and the faculty, coaches and administrators who support them as they pursue their dreams. Over 85% of our scholar-athletes study engineering or the sciences. Their ability to balance such a rigorous academic load and excel at such high levels as athletes is a distinctive hallmark of the Stevens Institute of Technology program.”

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort with the NACDA and honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program and achieving success in many sports (both men’s and women’s). Directors’ Cups are awarded annually in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA with points being awarded based upon an institution’s participation in post-season play.
