REST IN PEACE COACH BARTH

By Bruce Darrow Special to CNB News.net There are times when writing a story you need more than words. Readers must be able to envision what is being written. Enjoyment in reading comes with the great ability to put yourself in the place and time that is being written. GCHS Coach Bob Barth (image courtesy of the Philadelphia Inquirer) Listen to the Phillie's on radio; you can actually see the beads of sweat dripping from a pitcher as he approaches a batter with the game on the line. A swing and a miss can be visualized. The tension and emotions are now within each listener. Memories can be measured by how a story took on a life of its own. From Brooklawn to Boyertown the lasting positive impression of a single family can be felt and remembered. Baseball, basketball and clinics are the norm in many area towns but unlike... Read more →

NJ State Capital News for June 21

Constitutionally Mandated Property Tax Reform Defeated By Senate Democrats In Party Line Vote Republican Senator Joe Kyrillos’ floor statement asking that the senate rules be suspended in order to place SCR 104 on the desks to start the constituently mandated twenty day lay over for all proposed amendments to the state constitution: “Mr. Senate president, thank you for recognizing me. As you know, property taxes are higher in New Jersey than anywhere in the country. Efforts for the past 30 years, including statutory caps full of loopholes, have failed to control property taxes. In another state, Massachusetts, a constitutional cap on property tax increases gradually brought that state’s property taxes from the third highest in the country to among the better half of the states. I have proposed a constitutional amendment similar to the solution that worked in Massachusetts. I believe it is imperative for the process to amend the... Read more →

On the other side of the paper there was some information about what the union has done to help the city deal with “these challenging financial times and difficultly in budgeting processes.” From the pamphlet, We are all aware of the need for cut backs which is why the Firefighters and Fire Officers of the GCFD have changed our pay cycle schedule and agreed to forgo a pay increase since 2008 when our contact ended. A SMALL INVESTMENT IS PAYING OFF

By CNBNews.net The City of Gloucester City is the proud owner of a snow cone bike purchased recently for $150 by Councilman Nick Marchese. As for the naysayers who are complaining it was a waste of money, Marchese writes, “I purchased the bike at a yard sale in Cypress Gardens for a $150. I wanted to use the bike to earn money for our Celebrations Committee. We had Public Works, “Spags” clean up the bike and paint it and at the last minute Jack Hughes agreed to ride it in the Memorial Day parade. The great part was that Brain Freeze from Brooklawn who recently purchased the hot dog cart at the marina agreed to donate water ice, sell it out of our bike, and we donated the money made to the VFW and the American Legion. There were some who were naysayers about purchasing the bike saying what you... Read more →

Are Gloucester City Firemen Qualified to do Repairs on Fire Truck Engines?

The first letter that I had written covered suggestions for the Gloucester City Fire Department. The first part of the letter said that we would like to see the Fire Dept run by the county and backed up with vollies and leave a paid 24/7 ambulance within GC. We still believe this would be the best case, with this there would be no job loss and everybody who benefits from this service would be paying for it period. I also followed this up by saying that we believed that the residents that pay for this service should decide its outcome. This was taken by the paid guys as I wanted to abolish the GCFD altogether. There immediate response was to boycott mine and other business's in town who they believe share this perceived view of totally abolishing the GCFD. There boycott has only hurt there cause, at a time when... Read more →

Hunting and Fishing News for June 19: DEDICATED NJ BOATERS FUND TO GET RAIDED?

RFA Members Urged to Call Governor Christie to Save I BOAT NJ According to the Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTA/NJ), buried deep within this year's New Jersey budget proposal is a reduction in funds for the I BOAT NJ program. I BOAT NJ is a dedicated account that utilizes a portion of New Jersey boater registration fees to reinvest grant funds to selected eligible applicants to promote, improve and enhance the marine industry in the State of New Jersey for the benefit of the general boating public. Due to ongoing fiscal management problems in New Jersey, the Office of Management and Budget is looking to take much of the $2.5 million fund for the state's general fund, which would wipe out the entire program. The MTA/NJ has strongly opposed this and has been working with senior budget committee members to discuss the impact that a loss of funding... Read more →

Ocean City looking at bypassing Civil Service list to hire three firefighters; Interviewing laid-off firefighters from Gloucester City and Collingswood

“I’m looking at deviating (from the list),” Foglio added. “I’m a realist. I’m a manager and I have to have some fiscal responsibility. Normally we would operate in the traditional manner and take people off the list, but it takes at least nine weeks to train firefighters. At this point, at the rate we are using overtime and filling the holes we have and trained these new firefighters, it would put me in the red for overtime. At some point I would have to declare a state of emergency and money would be pulled from the 2011 budget.” Foglio said that would mean that “a pound of flesh” would come from the fire department’s 2011 budget. Foglio has interviewed firefighters from Gloucester City and Collingswood. Gloucester City has a 34-man department and is eliminating a third of that number due to a $1.2 million cut in extraordinary state aid. With... Read more →

Statement From The National Rifle Association On H.R. 5175, The Disclose Act The National Rifle Association believes that any restrictions on the political speech of Americans are unconstitutional. In the past, through the courts and in Congress, the NRA has opposed any effort to restrict the rights of its four million members to speak and have their voices heard on behalf of gun owners nationwide. The NRA's opposition to restrictions on political speech includes its May 26, 2010 letter to Members of Congress expressing strong concerns about H.R. 5175, the DISCLOSE Act. As it stood at the time of that letter, the measure would have undermined or obliterated virtually all of the NRA's right to free political speech and, therefore, jeopardized the Second Amendment rights of every law-abiding American. The most potent defense of the Second Amendment requires the most adamant exercise of the First Amendment. The NRA stands absolutely... Read more →

GLADING CHALLENGES ANDREWS TO SIX DEBATES IN THREE COUNTIES

Haddon Heights, NJ – Hoping Congressman Andrews is more willing to face his constituents in 2010 than he was in 2008, First Congressional District Republican Nominee Dale Glading (R-Barrington) hand-delivered an infinitely reasonable debate challenge to Rep. Rob Andrews's Haddon Heights office on Tuesday. “I’m inviting Rob Andrews to debate me six times -- twice in each county included within the First District – between now and Election Day,” said Glading. “A representative can’t really represent his constituents unless he’s willing to stand before them and defend his record. Concerned taxpayers have a lot of questions in 2010, and Rob owes them honest answers.” Glading is hopeful that Congressman Andrews will live by his own words. In 2008, Andrews mounted an unsuccessful primary challenge to U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg. When Lautenberg refused to debate, Andrews had nothing but harsh words of criticism for his opponent: In a conference call today... Read more →

MORIARTY UNVEILS BILL TO ABOLISH ‘BREATHING BONUSES’ FOR PUBLIC WORKERS

(4th LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT) – Assemblyman Paul Moriarty on Tuesday announced he’s introduced legislation to help control property taxes by barring county and local governments from giving longevity bonuses to public workers. “It’s long past time for these breathing bonuses to come to an end,” said Moriarty (D-Gloucester/Camden). “Property taxpayers have had enough, and this is one of many steps we should take to keep local government costs under control.” The bill (A-2936) is also sponsored by Assemblyman John Burzichelli and Celeste Riley (D- Gloucester/Cumberland/Salem). It would prohibit any county or local government – or agency and commission of county and local government – from granting to its employees any compensation that is based on the length of an employee’s service. “Length of service is not a good enough reason to charge property taxpayers more money,” Moriarty said. The bill wouldn’t affect the terms of any existing contract agreements, but once... Read more →

The NRA will continue to watch this bill and work to ensure that our members privacy and right to participate within the legislative and political process without the threat of retaliation is protected.... Del Borrello, D’Orazio and Morley Endorse “Cap 2.5” Plan to Rein in Property Taxes

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ – Calling for an end to reckless spending and excessive taxation in Washington Township, the Republican Township Council candidates Chris Del Borrello, Giancarlo D’Orazio and Dan Morley pledged their support for a 2.5% cap on annual property tax increases today at the Whitman Diner. Del Borrello and Morley were on hand representing their campaign team alongside an early supporter of the Cap 2.5% proposal, Assemblyman Domenick DiCicco (R-Franklin). “Washington Township taxpayers have seen their property tax bills nearly double since 2001,” said Del Borrello. “I’m unaware of any municipal service that’s twice as good or efficient as it was a decade ago. There’s just no denying the fact that our township’s skyrocketing taxes are directly related to the current regime’s chronic spending problem." The benefits of a 2.5% cap are readily apparent. If the 2.5% cap had been implemented beginning in 2001, the average Washington Township homeowner... Read more →

Hunting and Fishing News for June 15

Belmar, NJ June 14, 2010 Action required by June 18, 2010 By Anthony Mauro As you know, the surge in reported human/bear conflicts, and the failure of secured garbage cans and educational pamphlets to bring ecological balance to bears and available habitat, has prompted the NJ DEP to pursue a bear hunt. There remain people and groups that refuse to accept the research performed at East Stroudsburg University that's been used to substantiate a hunt. These people/groups are unconcerned about burgeoning human/bear conflicts; the need for public safety, science based game management and ecological health. A coalition of "Who's Who" animal extremist groups working to pressure Trenton to forgo a bear hunt include the BEAR Group, the Humane Society of the United States, the Sierra Club, Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey (AWFNJ), the Animal Protection League (APL) of New Jersey, In Defense of Animals (IDA), the Protecting Animal Welfare... Default Lines :: A landlord dropped a bomb on Kensington. It could happen again

Cover Story :: Article :: Philadelphia City Paper It was, demographically speaking, a brilliant business model. White, middle-class families who had been sustained for generations by factory jobs were leaving in droves; low- and middle-income Hispanics who needed affordable housing were moving in. Coyle bought houses from McBrides, Sloans and Myerses and sold them to Felicianos, Colons and Lopezes. For much of his career, these transactions were straightforward: Coyle bought for less and sold, or rented, for more. But in the mid-'90s, his business model began to change in a profound way. This change coincided with the rise of the housing bubble, as banks came to see property not as actual houses with actual people paying actual mortgages, but as abstract commodities to be sliced and sold — commodities that, the thinking went, could only increase in value. In 1996, Coyle began taking out second mortgages on his properties and using them... Read more →

MORIARTY INTRODUCES BILL TO CAP LOCAL PROPERTY TAX GROWTH AT 2.5 PERCENT

Measure Would Become Effective Quicker than Governor’s Version; Would Allow Flexibility to Address Unintended Consequences of Lower Cap (TRENTON) – Assemblyman Paul D. Moriarty (D-Gloucester) issued the following statement Monday after introducing legislation (A-2945) to lower to 2.5 percent the state’s current four percent cap on local property tax growth: “Building on the success of legislation sponsored and passed by Democrats in 2007, my new legislation will help place further downward pressure on New Jersey’s property taxes, lowering the existing tax cap from four percent to 2.5 percent. “Since its inception, we have seen the average rate of tax increases in New Jersey lowered to 3.3 percent annually – proof that the existing cap is working to hold down property taxes. Having seen the success of the four percent cap, we think there is more tightening we can do and lowering the cap can help us do it. “Gov. Christie... Read more →
