By CNBNews.net The two year contract talks between the City of Gloucester City and the union leadership that represents the City’s paid fire department came to an end today, Wednesday. The two sides met in the municipal building at 4:30 pm to cross the t’s and dot the i’s on a three year contract agreement. The union consented to no salary increase in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011 as well as capping vacation buys back and the elimination of holiday pay. Additionally, sick time buy back will be eliminated for the life of the contract. One of the key provisions in the agreement was the FMBA consent to eliminate longevity and roll it into the base salary. In April the public was told that the contract talks between the police union (PBA) and the City was in arbitration along with the contract talks with the firefighters (FMBA). City solicitor...

Press release The Department of Veterans Affairs National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is on track to record its 10,000th rescue — an achievement likely to occur some time around the Fourth of July. That’s 10,000 Veterans who would not be here today had they not called the VA Lifeline and talked to a trained responder — a responder who deemed it necessary to take immediate action to save the caller’s life. “These are people who call us, but they’ve already taken pills, or they have a gun in their hands, or they’re standing on a bridge,” explained Jan Kemp, VA’s National Suicide Prevention Coordinator. “These are the calls where we can’t wait. We call emergency services right away.” VA’s Lifeline crisis center, which opened in July 2007, is staffed 24/7 by 20 responders, social workers, health technician assistants and counselors who handle 15 phone lines and three chat lines. Seth Williams, State Representative Brendan Boyle and Councilman Curtis Jones announced an enhanced response to prevent witness intimidation. Both at the federal and state levels, legislation is being pursued to increase penalties for intimidation and to prosecute offenders. “It is unacceptable that Philadelphians could fear for their safety while stepping up on behalf of the community. In order to reinforce the great gains in public safety made by the Philadelphia Police Department over the past two years, we must have robust and successful prosecution of violent offenders, which includes protecting those who are brave enough to testify,” said Mayor Nutter. “My Administration will cooperate with local, state and federal agencies to protect witnesses from intimidation.” Mayor Nutter highlighted the dedication of $200,000 in...

CNBNEWS.net received a press release from the animal rights group SHARK, (Showing Animals Respect and Kindness) of Geneva, Il. announcing a demonstration at the Gloucester City’s firework display sponsored by Holt on Saturday. Because of the City’s budget problems Holt donated $15,000 to pay for the display. The SHARK press release says Leo Holt and the Philadelphia gun club he belongs to abuses animals (namely pigeons). NEWS RELEASE June 29, 2010 Related: Holt's Response to Allegation GROUP TO ATTEND HOLT FUNDED FIREWORKS DISPLAY THIS SATURDAY IN GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ Leo Holt leads a double life. On one side he is President of Holt Logistics, a major shipping company with terminals in Gloucester City, NJ and Philadelphia, PA, but the other side of him is much darker and cruel: He is President of the Philadelphia Gun Club in Bensalem Township, where every year tens of thousands of innocent pigeons are brutally, and mercilessly slaughtered. While the act of pigeon shooting in itself is abhorrent, it was what SHARK (Showing Animals Respect and Kindness) videotaped Leo Holt doing after one pigeon shoot at the Club that is so beyond the pale, so completely vicious, that if we had not captured it on videotape, it would be considered unbelievable. In the video, Holt is seen just beyond the fenced...

By Leigh Anne Hubbs NEWS Correspondent Last month School Board members had announced that Mount Ephraim's half- day pre-school program would cost $3,260 for the 2010-11 school year. The tuition will be due in two increments – one before the start of school in September and the second in January after Christmas break. Several parents, including a mother of twins, expressed concern for the cost of the pre-school program as well as the fact that the bill is only divided into two allotments during last week’s Board of Education (BOE) meeting. Parents suggested that the tuition payments be due monthly, which would ease their burden – especially for the payment due just after Christmas. Board members said the monthly payments would involve additional administrative costs, so to compromise they voted and approved for the tuition to be paid quarterly. In other news, teachers have developed a Monday-Friday schedule for the...

A family centered, intelligent and spiritual woman; MaryEllen possessed a strong knowledge of the world around her and was able to see everyday things in a unique and special way. Transforming items others thought were trash into works of creative art was something that came easily to MaryEllen. While her husband tended to the vegetables, her charge over the beautiful flower gardens was a chore of love. By CNBNews.net UEZ PROGRAM SAVED-Howard Clark, Gloucester City UEZ Director was questioned last Friday about the status of the UEZ program in the state and here in Gloucester City. Because of the state budget deficit Governor Christies had proposed to freeze all UEZ spending in the 32 districts in the coming fiscal year effective July 1. Clark said Christie and the legislature reached an agreement recently to keep the program alive. “Under the agreement $48 million was set aside for the zones to share for already approved shovel ready projects”, said Clark. State Senator Jeff Van Drew, D-1, told the Daily Journal, a Cumberland County newspaper, that changes are certain for the UEZ, and the overall impact on the state's 32 designated zones remains unclear, but the good news is the state won't end the UEZ program as some initially feared. Van Drew was asked by The Daily Journal :...

Image via Wikipedia As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a grave side service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Kentucky back-country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost; and being a typical man I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt bad and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down...

June 27, 2010 By Jordan Schelling / MLB.com MILWAUKEE -- One thing about the matchup between lefty reliever Zach Braddock (photo) and pinch-hitter Jim Thome in the Brewers' 5-3 win over the Twins on Wednesday really stood out to manager Ken Macha: Thome had not previously faced Braddock. Since calling Braddock up before the series finale at Target Field on May 23, the Brewers have seen the 22-year-old hard-throwing lefty enjoy plenty of success against hitters the first time he faces them. "If you haven't faced Braddock, you don't realize how the ball jumps up on you," Macha said. "The first time you face somebody like that ... he hides the ball, it jumps on you." In Thome's first at-bat against Braddock, the left-handed slugger went down swinging at a 1-2 slider. After getting Thome to strike out to end the sixth, Braddock struck out another batter who had not...

Image via Wikipedia Commentary by Hank F. Miller Jr. Tanabata Matsuri is the essence of summer and summer festivals. Held in Japan either July or August 7, other Asian countries such as China and Korea also hold Star festivals. The original form of Tanabata derives from Qi Xi, the Chinese Star Festival. Introduced to the Imperial Palace in Kyoto during the Nara Era (eight century), it became a popular event among the general public in the early Edo period (17th century).Mixing the old tale of Tanabatatatsume as well as various Oban traditions together with the original Chinese festival, it eventually developed into the modern form the we see it here today, with people writing their wishes on "Tanzaku" as it is called paper strips and put on bamboo trees to decorate them. The tale of Tanabata According to the tale of Tanabata, once upon a time long ago, there was...

June 25, 2010 | courierpostonline.com | Courier-Post by Barbara S. Rothschild Older teens wore their Gloucester Catholic High School baseball jerseys, and young men in business suits who'd been coached by Barth -- not only in baseball, but in basketball, as well -- joined them to ponder what life might be like without Barth around to spout his many whimsical "isms." Bobby Barth, a Winslow resident, was most recently first-base coach under Dennis Barth at Gloucester Catholic, helping the Rams to their 14th state title on June 5. John Lowe, Barth's stepson, eulogized the man he considered a true father for the 25 years he was married to Lowe's mother, Mary. "For me, he was a family dude, a nice guy -- the nice guy. He did everything for everyone," Lowe said. "He loved Haagen-Dazs ice cream, ate it by the gallon. And if you had any stocks, he'd say,...

The Bellmawr Fire Department can provide you with FREE smoke detectors and install them, if necessary, at no cost to you through our community smoke detector and battery program. Although 90 percent of American homes have smoke detectors many do not work due to neglect. This means that many homes and families that live in them are unnecessarily at risk. A properly maintained smoke detector can provide a warning during the early stages of a fire, giving the occupants time to escape unharmed. Smoke detectors are only effective if hey are installed in the proper locations and maintained regularly. If you have any questions about the smoke detector program or need assistance inspecting your detectors, feel free to contact the Borough Hall at 933-1313 and leave your contact information and someone from the Fire Department will be in touch with you. via www.bellmawrfire.com

Good luck to Linda Ennis as she goes to Florida to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. It was so nice to see the picture of Linda and her friend in your paper and to read the story about some of the fine things that Linda did over the years. As the writer said, there were too many to list, but I would like to add some. When I worked at our Gloucester City library, Linda was a leading volunteer. Nothing was too much trouble for her, and aside from answering every call for help with children’s programs, Linda often suggested things she could do to add to the fun. She was always in attendance with her children, and added so much enthusiasm to our special events. And all of that was in addition to the city-wide events she assisted. I’ll always remember Linda’s happy help, and wish her well as she...

Sunday, June 20, 2010 By Scott Chappelear A high school baseball team isn't supposed to be able to overcome injuries and win a state championship with five sophomores regularly in the lineup, only one senior on the field most days and a freshman as the No. 2 pitcher and playoff closer unless that team is Gloucester Catholic. But those youngsters rose to the challenge and combined with the returning veterans to create a 24-7 squad that edged Washington Township and won the Grand Slam Classic, reached the Diamond Classic semifinal and finally won a 14th state crown. Those achievements helped make Gloucester Catholic the Gloucester County Times Baseball Team of the Year. via www.nj.com
