Little League Museum to Offer Free Admission to Military Personnel and their Family This Summer

Little League’s Peter J. McGovern Museum will be one of many museums across the Museum1 county offering free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families this summer as part of an initiative by Blue Star Museums. More than 600 museums are taking part in the initiative that will run from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Blue Star Museums, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the participating museums announced the program today. Museums in all 50 states and the District of Columbia have joined forces with Blue Star Museums to make this offer. The complete list of participating Blue Star Museums is available at www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.

Starting May 28, the McGovern Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Those hours will be in effect through June 30. The museum will be open on Memorial Day.

Between July 1 and Sept. 6, operating hours for the museum will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The museum will be featuring additional programming by hosting two exhibits in the late summer and early fall.

From Aug. 14-29, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will provide several items for display in the museum.  In addition, the recorded ceremonial first pitch at Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Little League Baseball World Series will take place aboard the International Space Station and be seen on the scoreboard video screen at Little League Volunteer Stadium.

Following Labor Day, the museum will be featuring a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution titled, “Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente.”

For those who do not qualify for the Blue Star Museum program, admission to the museum is $5 for those 14 and older; $1.50 for children ages 5-13; and $3 for senior citizens (62 and over). Children age 4 and younger are admitted free of charge.
