The Jersey City Fire Department (JCFD) got five new Battalion Chiefs in a swearing in ceremony held May 24 at City Hall. The promotions come as the Healy administration tries to tame overtime costs in the department that have come from a recent surge in retirements, brought on by changes to the state pension system for public workers. The administration says the promotions will save approximately $30,000 per month in overtime costs. The new chiefs will eventually see a $5,000 raise as part of the promotion, but all have agreed to forego that salary increase until July 1 of next year. The current salaries of those being promoted range from $108,000 to $113,000. Battalion Chief is the third-highest rank in the JCFD, behind Chief and Deputy Chief.
