Square Apartment Complex is set to begin on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 5 PM with the official ground breaking ceremony. The City, in conjunction with developer, Orens Brothers of Philadelphia, is set to convert the 100-apartment complex into 50 town houses.

The new homes will be priced between $175,000 and $180,000, which will provide a wonderful opportunity for first-time home buyers. Additionally, homebuyers can take advantage of Gloucester City’s Garage Doors tower AD participation in the Live Where You Work Program, which provides potential homebuyers who work in the participating municipality with low interest mortgage rates, as well as down payment and closing cost assistance and additional savings from local businesses.

This project has been in the works since the City of Gloucester purchased the complex two years ago. With the rehabilitation comes an increase in tax revenue, as well as improvements to the appearance of the often traveled Route 130 corridor. In addition, this project revitalizes an area once plagued by drug sales and crime.

Members of City Council, Bruce Parry, John Hutchinson, and Nick Marchese, along with Mayor James, have made the rehabilitation of this property a priority to augment the development of the Meadowbrook Run, Beazer Homes Project. Mayor James said, “This rehabilitation project will be aesthetically appealing to the Route 130 Redevelopment corridor, generate a much needed tax base of 50 new townhouses, and also transform a former eyesore, and trouble plagued property into a viable and vibrant living community.” James continued, “This is a great location with regards to access to major highways and close to Philadelphia. We anticipate much interest and excitement about this proactive project.”

As the project progresses and information becomes available, updates will be available via the City Clerk’s office at (856)456-0205 or www.cityofgloucester.org.
