Most of the intensive, two-week pre-deployment training takes place in the high mountains outside of Salt Lake City because that environment closely resembles Afghanistan. View Photo Gallery 05/28/10 When Special Agent Rick M. deployed to Afghanistan for temporary duty in 2004, only a handful of FBI personnel were assigned to the war theater, and the Bureau had no formal training program to prepare them for the experience. Hundreds of our agents, analysts, and support staff have volunteered for assignments in Afghanistan and Iraq, and Agent M.—who has returned overseas several times since his first trip—is one of the people in charge of their pre-deployment training. About This Series FBI.gov spent two weeks following a class of FBI personnel preparing to deploy to support the FBI's missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. This series of stories, photos and videos is a glimpse into their experience at pre-deployment training...

(TRENTON) – Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Jack Conners (D-Camden/Burlington) released the following statement on Memorial Day 2010: “Four years ago, I found it necessary to introduce a law in New Jersey that made it a crime to steal the headstones, brass markers, flag, or flag holders from a veteran’s grave site. “Of course, I wish such legislation was not needed, but the reality was that, in cemeteries in Burlington and Camden counties, and indeed throughout New Jersey, the valuable metal found at many veterans’ grave sites became a target for thieves. “I was reminded of this recently when it was reported that a local cemetery in my district had the graves of veterans violated, and their markers stolen. While I know the law I drafted cannot prevent people from disrespecting veterans’ graves so brazenly, if they now choose to commit this crime and are caught they will be...

Image via Wikipedia WASHINGTON – In this week’s address, President Barack Obama asked all Americans to join him in remembering and honoring our men and women in uniform who have died in service to the country. The commitment these heroes have demonstrated – the willingness to lay down their lives so the rest of us might inherit the blessings of this nation – has helped make America the most prosperous, most powerful nation on earth and it is what we honor on Memorial Day. Remarks of President Barack Obama This weekend, as we celebrate Memorial Day, families across America will gather in backyards and front porches, fire up the barbeque, kick back with friends, and spend time with people they care about. That is as it should be. But I also hope that as you do so, you’ll take some time to reflect on what Memorial Day is all about;...

Nastasi died in prison this week, six months before his parole date. "I don't feel any emotion for him," Salamone, 45, of Mount Ephraim, said Friday. "He changed not only the families' lives, but mine, too." Nastasi, 60, of Haddon Heights, pleaded guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide in the May 15, 2002, crash that prosecutors said was a failed suicide attempt. Three years later, Nastasi, a father of two, was sentenced to seven years in prison. When Dogs ‘Hate’ Other Dogs During the first 16 weeks of life dogs learn to get along with other dogs. In a perfect world they observe their litter-mates for about eight weeks and are then adopted by a knowledgeable human who socializes them with lots of other dogs and humans. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world. If Fido doesn’t learn to get along with his own species in the first few months of his life chances are he will never be comfortable around other dogs. He may react fearfully or even become aggressive when confronted with one or many dogs. This will lead to further isolation because he will not be welcome in social, animal friendly situations. This problem does not get better unless active steps are taken to desensitize Fido. If your dog reacts aggressively around other dogs here are a few steps you can take to desensitize...

By CNB News The Verga World War II monument that disappeared some years ago when the intersection of Crown Point road and Hessian avenue was expanded has been re-created after a culmination of efforts led by Bob Jonas and members of the Verga VFW. Support was garnered by West Deptford Township officials. The project was spearheaded by Jeep MacAdams, formerly of Brooklawn NJ, who had become outraged when no one could produce the original monument that stood since 1941. PHOTO: SGT JEEP MACADAMS One hundred or so names of those who entered the service during WWII from Verga have been duplicated using pictures from the original. Of those, it has been ascertained, only Jeep and two others were still alive as of this past October, 2009. That is when a tentative ceremony was held announcing plans for replacement and a dedication accordingly on Memorial Day 2010. Prior to the October...

By Jon Whiten • | The Jersey City Independent The Jersey City Fire Department (JCFD) got five new Battalion Chiefs in a swearing in ceremony held May 24 at City Hall. The promotions come as the Healy administration tries to tame overtime costs in the department that have come from a recent surge in retirements, brought on by changes to the state pension system for public workers. The administration says the promotions will save approximately $30,000 per month in overtime costs. The new chiefs will eventually see a $5,000 raise as part of the promotion, but all have agreed to forego that salary increase until July 1 of next year. The current salaries of those being promoted range from $108,000 to $113,000. Battalion Chief is the third-highest rank in the JCFD, behind Chief and Deputy Chief. read via www.jerseycityindependent.com

New Jersey anglers who make time to get on the water this weekend may find true meaning in the saying, "Saving the Best for Last". This is the last week of the spring trout stocking season but certainly not the last week of great spring trout fishing in New Jersey. In fact, the Memorial Day Weekend has the potential to be the best weekend of the spring season for several reasons. Stocked waters are now teeming with trout. The Division's Pequest Trout Hatchery once again exceeded the spring production goal of 570,000 trout. The Hatchery produced and stocked 606,642 trout this spring and the more than 36,000 extra trout were added to stocking runs during the last several weeks of the season. Data from a recently completed angler survey provides further assurance there may be more trout in New Jersey waters now, than at any time during the spring season....

White-tailed Deer in New Jersey Harvest Summaries New Jersey's deer herd is a major component of the landscape throughout all but the most urbanized areas of the state. Deer affect our forests, farms, gardens, backyards and roadways. From a population reduced to a handful of deer in the early 1900s they rebounded during the 20th century to a thriving herd today. A healthy deer herd, managed at levels that are compatible with current land use practices and the human population, has great value to the people of the state. Deer are photographed, watched and hunted by many New Jerseyans and visitors from elsewhere. Deer hunters spend more than 100 million dollars each year as they enjoy approximately 1.5 million recreation-days hunting deer. Money spent in the course of deer hunting benefits a wide variety of New Jersey businesses. And for hunters looking for a place to hunt, New Jersey offers...

related category When East Meets West WHEN EAST MEETS WEST Commentary by Hank F. Miller Jr. Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama apologized Sunday for failing to keep his promise to move Futenma air base out of Okinawa, despite months of searching for an alternative. The administration's plan now is to shift U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma from a residential area in the city of Ginowan to the coast near Nago, a move similar to the original relocation plan signed with the U.S. in 2006 but strongly opposed by Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima. While clarifying the plan, Hatoyama said he will ask other prefectures at a meeting on Thursday to take on some of the U.S. Military drills currently staged in Okinawa. "This heartbreaking conclusion I've reached to return the Futenma base” site to Okinawa, Hatoyama said during a meeting with Nakaima that was open to the media and televised to...

(4th LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT) – Assemblyman Paul Moriarty on Tuesday announced he has introduced legislation to move school board and fire district elections to November, reforming an inefficient process while saving money and ensuring more voter participation. “We must change this costly system that elects school boards and fire commissioners with a super-minority of voters year after year after year,” said Moriarty (D-Gloucester/Camden). “The largest portion of our tax bills go toward schools, and fire districts also have taxing authority, yet we cling to the charades of these oddly timed elections. Ultimate fiscal responsibility and accountability should rest with officials elected in November by a majority of voters.” Fire district elections occur in February and school elections are in April. Under the Moriarty bill (A-2766): · Fire commissioner and school boards will be elected at the general election in November. Fire commissioners will take office on the first Tuesday in December...

Additional information about the threat posed by Asian Carp, along with the multi-state effort to address this issue, is available at www.stopasiancarp.com. Corbett said that on May 19, 2010, the states joined in a letter urging the United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE), along with other federal and state agencies, to take immediate and...
