For years, we’ve been steadily adding these files to our Freedom of Information/Privacy Act (FOI/PA) website so you can access them with a click of a mouse. But some records are not available online and require you to make a formal request to the FBI. This request process has just gotten easier, thanks to a new electronic form and revamped website that we are unveiling today. The new eFOIA form—as we call it—works like this: Type your information straight into the form, hit “submit,” and your request will be sent to us automatically. Or type in your information, print out the form, and mail or fax us a copy. You can also print and scan the completed form and e-mail it to us at [email protected]. Please note! WHEN EAST MEETS WEST Commentary by Hank F. Miller Jr. Sliding voter support over Futenma base, the U.S. Marine air station in Okinawa, have fanned talk that Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama continues to be in hot water with the U.S. Government. I am writing this commentary just in case the newspapers and the TV News broadcasts in the Delaware Valley aren't reporting news regarding this long running dispute with the people in Okinawa and their government. A bloody battlefield in 1945, Okinawa is the subject of an equally bitter political fight today. A majority of the prefecture's residence want the American military to go else ware. The U.S. -Japan alliance is almost 50 years old. The treaty terms are simple. The U.S. agrees to defend Japan. Tokyo agrees to be defended. Japan’s international role has been circumscribed by Article 9 of the postwar Japanese Constitution; domestic pacifism growing out of...

Bill’s Point of View: By Bill Cleary It is upsetting to think that you work all your life to pay off your 30-year home mortgage and after it is paid you still have to fork out thousands to the government to live in your home. Residing in a state that has the highest property taxes in the nation doesn’t help I know. I asked one of many friends who moved from NJ to the other side of the river how much he pays in property and school taxes. Bill Y. writes “Our house is located in Kent County Delaware and it is zoned agricultural, but even the homes that are not zoned agricultural still have reasonable taxes. Our house has two bedrooms, 1-1/2 baths, living room, dining room, den, kitchen, open front porch and enclosed rear porch. It is situated on 11.5 acres and we own to the middle of...

April 26, 2010 Honorable Stephen Sweeney Senate President New Jersey Senate State House Trenton, New Jersey 08625 Dear President Sweeney: As you are aware, the state Unemployment Insurance Fund is in severe financial jeopardy. Under your and Senator Kean’s leadership the Legislature has taken the first step to address funding the system in the future by adding a constitutional amendment, SCR-60, to the ballot that will prohibit future diversions from the fund. Sadly, past diversions have depleted the fund forcing the state to borrow from the federal government. To date we have borrowed more than $1.4 billion to cover our obligations. The UI Fund’s pending insolvency has tripped a trigger that will automatically initiate a $1 billion tax increase. This tax increase, which will begin July 1, 2010, will almost certainly stop the emerging recovery dead in its tracks. There is still time to modify the UI fund to mitigate...

Image via Wikipedia Senior citizens are by far the biggest losers in health reform. Consider that: More than half the cost of health reform will be paid for by $523 billion of cuts in Medicare spending over the next ten years. Although there are some new benefits for seniors (mainly new drug coverage), the costs exceed the benefits by a factor of more than ten to one. As many as 8.5 million of the 11 million seniors in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans may lose their coverage, according to Medicare’s Chief Actuary. Those lucky enough to retain their MA coverage will face steep cuts in benefits or hefty increases in premiums or both. In addition to these direct costs there are indirect costs, including new taxes on drugs and medical devices. Although these taxes don’t single out senior citizens, who do you think are the heaviest users of wheelchairs, crutches, artificial...

On August 12, 2009 former CNN reporter Lou Dobbs critiques the Amnesty Bill that was working its way through the various committees in Washington last summer. In the news clip Dobbs praises Minority Leader John Boehner for his candid remarks on the proposed bill. President Obama it appears favors a lenient immigration law. Yesterday the President used a naturalization ceremony in the Rose Garden to lash out at the Arizona Legislature for passing a bill requiring proof of legal status and empowering state and local police to stop people based on a suspicion of being illegal immigrants. From Fox News, Obama called for comprehensive immigration reform and said Washington's failure to act has bred a climate of fear and retribution in some border states. He singled out the Arizona bill - which would make it crime to be in the state without documentation - now before Republican Gov. Janice Brewer....

Parenting Your Pets To most Americans a pet is part of the family. Even folks that live just above the poverty level consider their pets important enough to take care of them when moving or buying groceries. Most of us give our pets presents at holidays and many celebrate their pets’ birthdays. In short, we ‘parent’ our pets. Most professional trainers wouldn’t dream of calling themselves ‘Mommy’, or ‘Daddy’, when talking to their dogs. I’m one of the exceptions to that rule. I think of my dogs as “the kids”, and they fill a void created when my human kids left the nest and created their own lives. I use the mommy/daddy handle when teaching classes and most of my clients appreciate it. Even though we know that dogs are not human they do share some child-like qualities, enough to cause us to nurture and love them. We are filled...

The Pennsylvania Home Heating Equipment Rebate Program offers rebates of up to $500 toward the cost of replacing non-electric residential hot water heaters, furnaces and boilers fueled by home heating oil, natural gas or propane with more efficient, ENERGY STAR-rated units. The proposed budget is for the maximum levy of 4%. The levy, with included costs for pension contributions and costs that are considered “cap exclusions” (fees that are allowed to be charged outside of the levy), will bring taxpayers an increase of $180 a year for the average home assessed at $210,000 in Audubon. Gannon broke the increase out by saying that without the pension costs, loss of state aid and cap exclusions, the 4% levy would only be $40 a household. read via www.theretrospect.com

This month’s message will focus on the budget. The unstable economy continues to affect everyone, including municipal government. The economy has affected every aspect of our lives. Interest rates on investments have dropped, and this is just one example of a revenue source that has disappeared. Local government depends on property taxes and state funding. Other sources of revenue include hotel tax and permit fees. The Governor has cut our energy tax receipt funding by $239,118 this year. In previous years, this funding was paid to the State by utility companies acting on behalf of the Township, and the Governor has taken this assistance away. The State has also cut $331,224 of Consolidated Municipal Property Relief Tax. This is just another of example of the assistance that is being taken away from the community. As a result of the cuts, the Township is forced to consume a total loss of...

April 18, 2010 LOUIS CAPPELLI JR., Freeholder Director CAMDEN CITY NJ-Here are the facts on any Camden County involvement with Tent City in Camden. The land on which Tent City is located is owned by the state Department of Transportation. Neither Camden County nor Camden City has any jurisdiction over it. The county has nothing to do with the founding or maintenance of Tent City and has no jurisdiction over it. Neither it nor the city of Camden ever had a goal or intention of "shutting it down," and had no jurisdiction to do so. Lorenzo "Jamaica" Banks, the self-proclaimed mayor of Tent City in Camden, who founded Tent City in 2006, chose April 15 as the date he wanted to close it. Reporters were told all of this from the first time they called about the April 15 deadline. The only interaction with Camden County came in providing services...

To the Brooklawn/Gloucester City NJEA Members, as a Camden/Philadelphia teacher of 20 years I would like to introduce you to real life. Currently, I am on Social Security Disability because I was shot at, assaulted, and locked down one time too often. When I left it took almost two years to get Social Security Disability, during which time I spent $12,500 on medical bills and which, five years later, I am still paying off a little at a time. On Social Security I get $1,500 plus a month (which I paid into for 40 years), Medicare costs me $94/month, and Part D (Rx) costs an additional $96 per month. I have to pay 20 percent of my medical bills. My Rx co-pay varies by prescription, but is from $10-$45, for an average of $120 per month. Some Rx’s are not covered at all. By November 1, I have exhausted my...

For Immediate Release Monday, April 19, 2010 By New Jersey Governor Chris Christie The Star-Ledger NJ.com April 18, 2010, 6:55AM Tuesday is Election Day in New Jersey, and this year’s fiscal and economic crisis has created hard choices that demand attention. I am a product of New Jersey’s public schools. I know how good our schools and hardworking teachers are. I owe a lot to my teachers in Livingston for helping to lay the foundation for my success. But the dedication and quality of our teachers is not in question and never has been. Right now, we are addressing the challenge of providing our children the highest quality education while responsibly addressing New Jersey’s fiscal mess and crippling taxes. When fewer resources available, local school districts and education associations are being asked to share in the sacrifice. New Jersey is facing a reality that can no longer be ignored. I...
