Maine Lawsuit: Trappers Win Big

by Norm (Skip) Trask, Legislative Liaison for Maine Trappers Association The lawsuit threatening to ban many of our trapping privileges is over! The results couldn’t be better. In mid-November, Judge Woodcock handed down his long-awaited decision. He ruled in favor of the defendant and defendant interveners and against the plaintiffs. The six-day trial ended in late June. More than four months later, after the judge was able to allocate the time necessary to thoroughly review and consider what he termed the “exhaustive testimonial and documentary evidence” presented during trial, he issued his 28-page ruling. In a nutshell, he found that... Read more →

Secondly I’d like to address Governor Christie’s recent budgetary statements and remark on the impact they will have on our own budget preparation. Simply put, his... Read more →

New Jerseyans Overwhelmingly Support Fishing & Hunting!

It's true. Approval of fishing is highest at 87% followed by hunting at 66% and then trapping at 45%. This is great news for environmental stewardship and conservation. It is especially encouraging since not all New Jerseyans participate in these activities... but, impressively, support them! Who says? Well, I am sure New Jersey's 650,000 to 800,000 anglers, hunters and trappers would be boastful, but we admit to our bias. So, we will instead rely on the findings of the research firm Responsive Management. Letters: What’s Good for Nike Isn’t Good for This Country

I t was jarring to read in the USATODAYS profile on Nike's CEO Mark Parker that Nike intends to double or triple their 1.5 billion dollar investment in China. Think what that investment would do to the economy in Nike's primary target market-- the USA. Nike could still make a profit, albeit lower by putting the manufacturing investment and jobs in this country. It's been my experience that Nike does very little for grassroots fitness in this country, choosing instead to invest in marketing. What's good for Nike isn’t good for this country and is barely good for the low... Read more →
