During a session made short by the threat of an impending snowstorm, Gloucester City School Superintendent Paul Spaventa recognized the efforts of several individuals during last week’s Board of Education meeting.

He said Brandon Labbree won the annual Voice of Democracy essay contest for the Gloucester City Senior High School, and Crystal Underwood was the winner for the Junior High.

Both Labbree and Underwood will read their essays at next month’s School Board meeting.

Spaventa also praised the school district’s facilities staff for their speedy snow removal efforts during this season’s most recent storm.

In other business, the Board accepted, with regret, the resignation of Public Relations Officer Lynda Lathrop, who will retire at the end of this school year.

Board Secretary Margaret McDonnell recommended several items for approval pertaining to the 2010 School Board Election, which will be Tuesday, April 20, from 2 to 9 p.m.

There will be four seats up for grabs — three three-year terms and one two-year term.

McDonnell said nominating petitions for those interested in running must be filed with the board secretary on or before Monday, March 1, at 4 p.m. The drawing of names for ballot position will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10, in the business administrator’s office at the Mary Ethel Costello School.

Residents will cast their votes at the following polling places on April 20:

School District “1, 2 and 3”first ward (General Election District 1, 2 and 3), Gloucester City Library, 50 Railroad Avenue; School District “4” first ward (General Election District 4), Gloucester Heights Fire House, 230 Nicholson Road; School District “1 and 2” second ward (General Election District 1and 2), Mary Ethel Costello School, 520 Cumberland Street; School District “3” second ward (General Election District 3), Cold Springs School, 1194 Market Street; School District “1” third ward (General Election District 1), Pine Grove Fire Hall, 9th and Jersey Avenues; and School District “2” third ward (General Election District 2), Gloucester City Jr. Sr. High School, 1300 Market Street.

McDonnell also said the meeting schedule for April has been revised.

The Board will now meet at 7 p.m. on the following dates: Thursday, March 25 (caucus meeting), Tuesday, March 30 (regular meeting), Thursday, April 29 (reorganization meeting) and Tuesday, May 4 (regular meeting).

The Board will meet again at 7 p.m. on March 4 for a caucus session.

The next regular meeting will be Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. in the GHS media center. At that time student representatives from each of the district’s schools for the month of February will speak before the Board, as they were excused from this month’s meeting due to the inclement weather.
