Letter: The Highway Department Did A Terrible Job Removing Snow

I am writing in regards to the snow this last couple of weeks. I know that we do not pay the highest taxes, but I believe our Public Works people do make decent money. After the first snowstorm of more than two feet, Monmouth Street -- which happens to be one of the main roads out of Gloucester City -- was horrible with so many ruts. I went partially sideways due to them. Barely missing not one but two cars front and back if I had slid just ever so little more even going slow little more than 1-2 miles per hour. Where was our Street Department? On January 8 there was very little snow and yet again Monmouth Street was nothing but ice most of the way from King Street to Johnson Boulevard. Even if I used Market Street, which I think the county takes care of, I still... Read more →

Mount Ephraim Public Works Department Praised for Snow Removal

By Leigh Anne Hubbs NEWS Correspondent After more than 20 inches of snow fell last month, Mayor Joseph Wolk (photo) received calls from residents complimenting the great job the Mount Ephraim Department of Public Works did clearing roads. The department is also responsible for the seasonal banners that help to beautify the town, Wolk said during the recent Board of Commissioners meeting. Commissioner Greenwald thanked the police, fire, ambulance and public works for doing a wonderful job in helping to clean up after the snowstorm. Commissioner Gilmore said the fire department dug out all of the fire hydrants. In other business, Gilmore said Fire Chief Mario Scullan is retiring. He will be replaced by Brian Gilmore who has 24 years experience. Wolk happily said the NJ Department of Transportation awarded the town a grant for $755,000 to help drainage on Bell Road. He said this is the largest grant Mount... Read more →

Brooklawn Council Selects Branella as President

By Sara Martino NEWS Correspondent Theresa Branella and Ryan Giles were installed as re-elected Brooklawn Borough Council members during the reorganization meeting January 4, following the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mayor John Soubasis. Camden County Freeholder Ian Leonard officiated at the swearing-in ceremony, administrating the oath of office to both council members. Branella was selected by her peers to serve as Council President. Soubasis thanked the freeholder for his concern for Brooklawn. “Ian always works in our direction,” he said. Leonard’s office is at the same location in the Brooklawn Shopping Center that housed former Assemblyman Joseph Roberts. “It is sad to see Roberts step down. We are like the little train that could. Letter: Captain Paul Apologizes to Children

On behalf of the Fire Department, I would like to apologize to those areas of Gloucester City that did not get the chance to have Santa come there way. Due to the snow storm, we were unable to transport Santa safely to some areas of the City. Because of this safety risk, we felt it was in everybody’s best interest to cancel the Saturday and Sunday schedule. The Fire Department membership is down and it is getting tougher each year to keep this tradition alive. I reached out with Councilman Bruce Parry’s help to other organizations who were very willing to help this cause. Although weather did not allow us to complete our task this year, I would still like to thank all the organizations who were ready and willing to help keep this tradition alive and they are as follows: Lions Club, Little League, Girls Softball, Mustangs Football, Democrat... BY BILL CLEARY BYE CONAN, GOOD RIDDANCE-February 15, 2009 Gloucester City Police received a call that Christopher DeMunguia, 35, a suspect who was wanted on a $50,000 warrant for an Aggravated Assault charge, was sitting in a bar located on King Street. LETTERS: STOP THE MADNESS!

The New Jersey Outdoor Alliance has been at the forefront of detailing how the animal extremists support those that use eco-terrorism, threats and intimidation to coerce state and local governments to eliminate fishing and hunting as a means of good public policy for environmental stewardship and as a means to feed oneself and their family. Now, PETA and the New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance, organizations identified in a Department of Homeland Security report as supporting those who commit acts of eco-terrorism, are attempting to intimidate the people who are doing the right thing by protecting the health of our forests by means of culling deer. Whether you are a bow hunter or a "muzzy" hunter, whether you are an angler or simply support acts of conservation - we all have a vested interest in the outcome of a successful culling at Garret Mountain. Pet Tip of the Week: Choosing a Dog to Fit Your Lifestyle

By Dawn Watson So you go to your local shelter and fall in love with a dog. The shelter staff tells you the dog is a 2 year old Poodle-Rottweiler mix. You fill out the application and go home to your 2-bedroom apartment that you share with your wife and baby daughter. What’s wrong with this picture? Adopting or purchasing a dog is a 16-year commitment. It includes training, walking, toys, veterinarian visits and the accompanying costs including spaying or neutering, licensing, and much more. But, even before looking for a dog you should do some research on the specific needs of each breed of dog to see if that breed (or mixed breed) will fit in with your lifestyle! SAY CHEESE...Darby! Look this way! Let’s go back to the dog at the shelter: Poodles and Rottweilers need lots of exercise. Can you provide that exercise? Do you have a... Read more →

“Color the Green Movement Blue: A Remedy for Environmental Health.”

Written by Anthony P. Mauro, Sr Chairman New Jersey Outdoor Alliance is now available. Section Two is devoted to the story of the NJOA. About the book (Press Release) "Color the Green Movement Blue: A Remedy for Environmental Health” is an attempt to systematically remedy environmental health by means of establishing a culture of ecology, which is founded on an understanding of ecological relationships, the precepts of conservation and a blue-collar value system. A blue-collar value system is key to establishing a culture of ecology—it includes acknowledging and studying the higher order (God or Mother Nature) inherent in the design and workings of ecosystems, participation in the hands-on activities of angling and hunting to gain a facility with the concept of conservation and unionizing conservationists into a grassroots coalition to advance common interests through political activism. I call this approach to environmental health “blue-collar conservation” and its undertaking coloring the... Read more →

On Mentoring and Being Mentored

GLOUCESTER CITY NJ-My name is Dawn Watson. I train dogs. For me, a typical day begins with emails or phone calls to students and former students, (from the Animal Behavior College) apprentices, (from my Apprenticeship Program at Brother of the Wolf) and colleagues from some of the many animal shelters and professional organizations I support. This task may take up to three hours to accomplish. But, why is it so important to reach out to these folks? It’s important because I am a mentor. One does not need to be exceptionally skilled or articulate in order to mentor. The most important attribute is to be able to listen. Listening is an art form. It means that an individual reads the body language and tone of voice of the speaker. In the case of emails I look for capital letters, underscores, or any unusual phrase that may indicate the writer is... Read more →

Bill’s Point of View:The Blizzard of ’09 Still the Topic of Discussion

The record snow storm began on Friday December 19th and didn’t end until early Sunday morning, December 20. Nearly two feet of snow fell over that time period. According to Chief Housing Officer Joseph Stecklair he and Mayor Bill James were discussing the storm around 9am in front of the municipal building on Monday, December 21. Stecklair said he noticed that pedestrians were being forced to walk in the streets because sidewalks were not cleared. Because of safety concerns Stecklair said he contacted Police Chief George Berglund, and it was decided that the housing office would gather up addresses of those properties that were in violation of the law. “It took Kyle (Wagner) assistant housing officer all day... The Gloucester City dog training school, Brother of the Wolf, had some welcome guests recently; two stray dogs rescued from Iraq and Afghanistan are being trained at the facility located at 700 Market Street. An article Dogs of War was published Saturday in the Philadelphia Daily News. K-Pot and RG were brought to the United States as part of an SPCA International initiative to retrieve dogs and cats befriended by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The mixed breed dogs are being trained by Danielle Berger, of Sewell. “Most of these dogs were born in war zones,” said Dawn Watson, author of CNB Pet Tips and owner of Brother of the Wolf. “They’ve never seen leaves falling or snow or people they can trust.” The SPCA International says it costs $4,000 for each animal to be rescued from the Middle East. ShopRite and General Mills Recognize Local Bloggers Who Raised Awareness of Hunger

January 27, 2010 Edison, NJ (January 27, 2010) – Many of us have heard the expression “pay it forward,” but ShopRite’s community-based hunger-fighting charity, ShopRite Partners In Caring, applied this theory in a new way. For the first time, ShopRite and General Mills teamed up with online influencers and invited them to become Bloggers In Caring, to spread the word about food insecurity and inspire their readers to help fight hunger. As part of the Blog It Forward To Fight Hunger campaign, a program designed to increase hunger awareness, bloggers were asked to engage their audience in a conversation about hunger. For every comment on a blogger’s post, up to 30 comments, ShopRite and General Mills pledged to donate one box of cereal to a local food bank. More than 80 bloggers participated in the Blog It Forward To Fight Hunger campaign, resulting in a donation of 3,000 boxes of... Read more →

Your Dog’s Prey Drive—Fact & Fantasy

Pet Tip of the Week: By Dawn Watson What is a prey drive? A prey drive is defined by Wikipedia as the instinctive behavior of a carnivore to pursue and capture prey. “But,” you ask, “What does that have to do with Fluffy?” Answer: a lot! Whether Fluffy is a Maltese, a Puggle, or a Siberian Husky, all dogs exhibit a certain amount of instinctive prey drive! Perhaps you’ve observed your dog crouched outside, looking as though he was stalking a leaf. Or, maybe Fido is tossing his favorite chew-toy up in the air and pouncing on it. That, my friends, is an exhibition of prey drive! Fido is ‘stalking’ the leaf and ‘killing’ the toy! Whether you believe that all dogs have descended from wolves or not your observations of your dog’s behavior should tell you what you need to know. Some folks wonder whether this instinct is breed-specific.... Read more →

Assembly Passes One-Gun-A-Month Reform Bill

January 8, 2010 Thursday, the New Jersey Assembly voted unanimously (73-0-3) to approve S3104/A4361. These bills were drafted in response to recommendations put forth by the Firearms Task Force created after the midnight passage of New Jersey’s gun rationing law. S3104/A4361 now head to the desk of Governor Jon Corzine (D) for his consideration. While NRA attempted to create a more robust exemption for gun owners, these requests fell upon deaf ears and the bill passed as written without creating changes beneficial to New Jersey’s law-abiding firearm owners as promised by the Firearms Task Force. Proponents contend this measure would address the problems with New Jersey's "one-gun-a-month" law; however, it falls far short. While it would, in limited circumstances, allow a law-abiding person to purchase multiple handguns, an individual would only be able to do so after filing a formal application with the State Police. In addition, the individual would... Read more →

Letters: Regarding the Snow Removal Ticket Issue

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Gloucester City Police Chief George Berglund and Housing Inspector Joe Stecklair about the questionable ticketing of preselected property owners and/or residents. A total of 54 properties were selected for tickets. Ordinance 73-15 addresses the issue of snow removal from sidewalks. The ordinance says “It is the duty of the police officers of Gloucester City, to make complaint against any person or persons who violate73-15 of this ordinance”. Chief Berglund acknowledged that he did not assign any police officers to perform the required duty of the ordinance nor did he know how the time was established to start the count down for the violation. Chief Housing Inspector Stecklair acknowledged that he volunteered his services to “Be the Eyes and Ears of the Police Department”. It was his position that “something needed to be done to ensure safe passage of children to school”. Stecklair... Read more →
