Councilwoman Theresa Branella administered the oath of office to Charles Holland as a member of the Brooklawn Borough Police Department during the December Council meeting.
Holland’s wife and son held the Bible for him as he took his oath.
Holland had served as borough officer from January 1996 to September, 2002, and then transferred out through an inter-governmental transfer program, serving in Somerdale and Camden City.
Michael Mevoli, administrator of the Joint Insurance Fund (JIF) for the Borough,
updated Mayor John Soubasis and Council on the program, including cost-saving incentives.
“Every two years insurance policies must be evaluated,” he said. “There are a few
changes regarding employee’s liability. Also, the amount of the deductible clause will be raised from $10,000 to $20, 000.”
“Premium costs can be lowered when training sessions are attended to by borough officials and police officers. As much as $250 per attendee will come off the premium charge.”
Mevoli said special training is available for the Chief of Police, Police Captain and Lieutenant, who will then inform and train the rest of the police force.
He encouraged Council members to attend training sessions in Collingswood, on Tuesday, January 12.
Council accepted five applications for the borough EMS service.
Councilman Jerry Granstrom said there are still concerns regarding the response time of the EMS services. Recently, several residents cited slow response times to their calls for help.
“Presently there are three applicants attending training sessions. We are trying to fix what is broken,” he said.
Council has been pursuing Conrail to paint the train trestle at the Circle.
“The advertisers listed on the trestle are willing to pay to have the bridge painted,” Mayor Soubasis said, adding that new owners of the Metro Diner, formerly Ponzio’s, would like to share in the painting costs since Ponzio’s is still advertised on the bridge.
“I would like to see both sides displaying Brooklawn businesses,” Soubasis said.
In other business, several resolutions were approved including: budget transfers for 2009; authorize a municipal lien against Block 128, Lot 7; change order #3 for improvements to the community circle.
Also, cancellation of property tax balances under $10; approval of a Bingo license for the American Legion and awarding of a contract to Coyne Chemical for calcium hypochlorite tablets for the Water Department.
