Pet Tip of the Week

You step outside, just for a moment, to get the mail. A flash of a tail later you realize that Fido has run out the door. Now, he is nowhere to be seen! What do you do, now?

Here are some methods I have used to successfully find a lost dog:

  1. Arm yourself with your cell phone and a leash that can double as a collar and leash in case his collar comes off. Also grab his favorite toy and some treats.
  2. Call his name within walking distance of your home.
  3. If he does not respond get in your car and drive around with the window open, calling his name.
  4. Call your local police department (not 911) and report that your dog is missing.
  5. If, after about a half hour of driving you still haven’t located the dog go back home. He may have doubled back to wait at the door for you.
  6. If he is not at home go inside and gather some pictures of him; if you’re able to make posters, quickly create a bunch of them.
  7. Thumbtack the posters everywhere. Make sure the posters include identifying markings, your phone number, your address, and all other pertinent information about him. Take one to the police station, too.
  8. Email or call area rescue groups, animal shelters, and your friends and ask for their help.
  9. Offer a small reward—even if it’s $10—to anyone that brings Fido home safely!

The most important rule is Don’t Give Up! Someone, somewhere will see him and chances are pretty good that you’ll get him home safely!

Feel free to call me with any questions at 856-349-2508 or email me at [email protected] . There is never a fee for a phone or email consultation! I will be happy to help you and your family enjoy your dog for life!

Next week’s topic will be entitled, Losing a Beloved Pet Through Death. As always, Cleary’s notebook encourages dialogue so your comments are welcome!

Wado, udohiyu, (thank you very much, in the Cherokee language)
