Rutgers Women's Basketball Pushes Past No. RV/22 Pitt, 52-46
Senior Duo of Ray and Junaid Combine for 33 points
- Posted on 1/10/2010 4:39:04 PM
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (January 10, 2010) – Senior Brittany Ray (Bronx, N.Y.) had 17 points and classmate Rashidat Junaid (Chesilhurst, N.J.) added a career-best 16 points to lift Rutgers women’s basketball to a 52-46 victory over Pitt on Sunday afternoon at Peterson Events Center.
Ray has scored in double figures of 15 of 16 games this season, including the last 12 straight. Junaid collected a team-best nine rebounds and six blocks for Rutgers (10-6, 2-0 BIG EAST).
Pitt (11-5, 0-3) was led by Taneisha Harrison with 13 points.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first half with the Scarlet Knights holding a 27-25 lead at intermission.
RU opened the second half on a 9-4 tear with three players accounting for all of the scoring. Sophomore Khadijah Rushdan (Wilmington, Del.) sandwiched two free throws in between two buckets from Junaid and a three-pointer by Ray to give the visitors a 36-31 lead with 12:35 to play.
Pitt cut the deficit to three on a fast-break opportunity only to see RU take its largest lead on two of its next three possessions. Ray drained a triple –her third of the game – from the far side and followed with one of two from the charity stripe to give RU a 40-33 advantage with 8:59 remaining.
The Panthers used a 5-0 run to close to two (40-38) on a baseline three-pointer by Harrison at the 6:24 mark. The Scarlet Knights answered the pressure with Junaid following a teammate’s miss with a high-soaring tip. The senior center scored on the next RU possession – off a beautiful dish from Ray- and sophomore Nikki Speed (Pasadena, Calif.) swiped Pitt’s Chelsea Cole at the other end and completed the steal plus the lay-up to make it an eight-point game (46-38) and six unanswered points for Rutgers with 4:21 showing.
Pitt pieced together an 8-2 surge to close to 48-46 with 1:31 to play, but that would be as close as they would come. Rutgers grabbed some timely rebounds in the closing minute and hit three of four from the
line in the final seven seconds to seal the win, its 23rd over Pitt all-time (22-3).
After Pitt took a three-point edge at 8-5 on a drive by Jania Sims, Rutgers responded with six straight points – four of those from Junaid – to take an 11-8 edge with 11:53 on the clock. A see-saw battle ensued as the teams traded points with five ties and five lead changes highlighting the first half.
Rutgers is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 13, traveling to Syracuse for a 7:00 p.m. showdown.
Frank reaches milestone as TCNJ outlasts NJCU
Jersey City, NJ... The College of New Jersey men’s basketball team registered its first New Jersey Athletic Conference win of the year and third straight victory overall defeating New Jersey City University 66-60 in overtime.
During the win, senior Jay Frank (Brick, NJ/Brick) eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau for his career. Frank, who finished the game with 13 points, becomes the 21st Lion in program history to reach that milestone.
Senior Aaron Syvertsen (Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) continued his strong offensive play netting a game-high 22 points. Syvertsen led the way on 9-of-16 shooting, which included a clutch three-pointer in overtime that provided TCNJ (7-5, 1-2 NJAC) with a six-point lead.
Down 28-22 at halftime, the Lions quickly took command in the second half. The lead exchanged hands throughout the second period as NJCU (5-6, 1-2 NJAC) forged ahead 54-53 at the 1:24 mark. Junior Steve Siracusa (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) hit the first of two free-throws to knot the game at 54 with 1:17 left in the contest. Each side had their chances to win the game in the final minute, but neither could convert in regulation as the see-saw battle was destined for overtime.
The sharp-shooting duo of Frank and Syvertsen exemplified senior leadership hitting big jump shots early-on in the overtime period. The Gothic Knights battled back and cut the lead to three points when Kyle Ingram buried a three-pointer. But freshman guard Brandon Johnson (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) hit the two biggest free throws of his young collegiate career with 46 seconds remaining to give the Lions enough breathing room to hold off NJCU.
The Lions shot 47 percent from the floor in regulation, but were far too generous in other areas to host NJCU. They converted just 11-of-19 foul shots (58 percent) and turned the ball over 24 times. The Gothic Knights entered the game averaging 11 steals (tops in the NJAC) per game and matched their season average through the first two periods.
Siracusa finished with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. Senior William Jett (Brown Mills, NJ/Pemberton) was three-for-three from the field chipping in with seven points and two steals in the road win.
Not surprisingly, Frank reached the 1,000-point mark by sinking a free throw. The senior guard entered the game shooting better than 81 percent from the foul-line for his career and dropped in his milestone point with 2:56 remaining in the first half to give the Lions a 22-21 lead. Frank currently ranks second in the NJAC in scoring averaging 16.7 points per game.
The last player to reach that milestone was Scott Findlay against Rutgers University-Newark in 2005. Current assistant coach Greg Grant is the all-time leading scorer in TCNJ history with 2,611 points from 1986-1989.
TCNJ returns home this Monday, January 11 to play a make-up game against Drew University at 7 p.m. The Lions host an NJAC double-header against Rutgers University-Camden on Wednesday, January 13.
