Rutgers in Rhode Island for Saturday Evening Contest at Providence

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 8, 2010) - Rutgers (9-5, 0-2) will look to snap a three game skid and earn its first BIG EAST Conference victory of the season when it travels to Rhode Island to meet Providence (9-6, 1-2) in an 8:00 p.m. tip-off Saturday evening (Jan. 9) at the 12,993-seat Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Both teams are coming off losses to league foes this past Wednesday night, with the Scarlet Knights dropping an 82-56 decision at No. 8-ranked West Virginia and the Friars suffering a 92-70 home defeat to Louisville. The loss to WVU marked RU’s second loss in three games to a top ten ranked team after an 81-67 defeat at No. 9 North Carolina on Dec. 28.

The game will be televised live locally on SNY and via the web at www.ESPN360.com and www.SNY.tv. The game will likely be joined in progress on SNY after Jets Post Game Live playoff coverage. The contest will be available live from its onset via www.ESPN360.com and SNY.tv. Don Orsillo will serve as play-by-play announcer, Ron Perry will provide the commentary and Shawna Hassett will serve as courtside reporter. The game will air on SNY in its entirety later that evening at 11:00 p.m. immediately following SportsNite.

On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers Radio Network, WOR 710 AM in New

York City and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU 88.7 FM will also broadcast the game.

Saturday evening’s contest marks the 20th all-time meeting between RU and PC, with the Friars holding a 12-7 advantage in victories. PC has won six straight in the series after RU captured consecutive victories in 2004 and 2005. In BIG EAST regular season play, PC holds an 11-7 edge. The Scarlet Knights are 2-7 in games played at Providence, last winning at PC on Feb. 12, 2000 by a 69-60 score. The teams played twice last season, with the Friars winning both of the home-and-home meetings.

Redshirt junior forward Jonathan Mitchell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) scored a career-high tying 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting Wednesday night in Morgantown. Sophomore guard Mike Rosario (Jersey City, N.J.) chipped in with 11 points, while senior center Hamady Ndiaye (Dakar, Senegal) grabbed eight rebounds and issued three blocks to boost his season total in rejections to 71. The Scarlet Knights were victimized by 20 turnovers which resulted in 27 points for the Mountaineers.

Ndiaye is second nationally in blocks with an average of 5.1 rejections per game, while also ranking third among NCAA players in career blocks. As of January 6, he had accumulated more blocks this season than 11 teams in the BIG EAST. The Scarlet Knights ranked second nationally in blocks in the most recent (Jan. 3) NCAA statistical report.

Louisville used a 14-0 first-half surge and a 22-5 second-half run to defeat Providence Wednesday night in the league home opener for the Friars. Junior Marshon Brooks led PC with 21 points, while freshman Bilal Dixon added 12 points and four rebounds. Providence opened its BIG EAST slate with a 93-78 loss at Notre Dame before earning a 74-59 win at St. John’s. Sophomore forward Jamine Peterson averages a double-double, scoring 17.0 points and grabbing 10.0 rebounds, to pace the Friars in both categories. GAME NOTES

McCollum Reaches 1,000 Career Points; Holy Family University Women’s Basketball Downs Chestnut Hill, 74-46

PHILADELPHIA – Forward Christine McCollum (sr. Abington, Pa./St. Basil’s Academy) became the 20th player to score 1,000 career points as the Holy Family University women’s basketball team knocked off Chestnut Hill College, 74-46, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Thursday night at the Campus Center.
Holy Family (12-1, 5-0 CACC) increased its winning streak to 12 with the victory. The Tigers won their 59th straight regular season home contest. It is also the team’s 89th consecutive CACC regular season win, three away from tying the NCAA Division II record.
The game started out as a back-and-forth affair with three ties and three lead changes. Forward Catherine Carr (jr. Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) broke a nine-all tie with five of her game-high 19 points to put Holy Family ahead 14-9 with 12:41 remaining in the half.
McCollum increased the lead to nine (22-13) with one of her game-high three three-pointers at the 9:37 mark.
Chestnut Hill forward Aiesha Smith pulled her team within 24-18 by hitting a three-pointer with 7:26 remaining in the half. Smith led the Griffins (2-10, 1-3 CACC) with 16 points.
The Holy Family lead hit double-figures for the first time when guard Molly Hanlon (fr. Narbeth, Pa./Lower Merion) made a three-pointer that made the score 30-20.
Holy Family led by as many as 13 points (37-24) when forward Lindsey Tennett (jr. Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) connected on a lay-up. Tennett finished with eight points.
The Tigers led at half-time, 39-30.
McCollum recorded her 1,000th career point with 18:06 left in the contest. She hit the first of two foul shots to reach the milestone. She is the second Tiger to accomplish the feat this season. Carr hit 1,000 points in the season opener at Bentley.
After hitting the second free throw, McCollum increased the Tiger lead to 17 points (47-30).
Leading 47-32, the Tigers went on a 10-0 run that put the team ahead by 25 (57-32) with 12:41 remaining. Five different players scored during that span.
Holy Family’s lead reached a game-high 30 points (74-44) after two made free throws by Tennett with 2:55 to play.
Carr filled up her stats sheet with eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Tennett tied Carr for the team rebounding lead. McCollum corralled seven boards.
Forward Chanta’l Hardy added 10 points for Chestnut Hill.
Holy Family shot 40.8 percent (29 of 71) from the field, while Chestnut Hill was held to 33.3 percent (20 of 60). The Tigers also controlled the boards with a 50-35 advantage. Twenty-three of Holy Family’s rebounds came on the offensive end.
Holy Family will hit the road for four consecutive CACC games, starting on Saturday, January 9 at Dominican at 1 p.m.

Holy Family University Men’s Basketball Loses to Chestnut Hill, 79-62

PHILADELPHIA – Forward Justin Swidowski (so. Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross) poured in a game-high 25 points, but the Holy Family University men’s basketball team fell to visiting Chestnut Hill, 79-62, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) showdown on Thursday night at the Campus Center.
Guard Khiry Hankins (fr. Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country) was the responsible for the Tiger offense early on with six of the team’s first seven points, however the team trailed 11-7. Hankins finished the contest with 12 points.
For the next eight minutes, the game stabilized with margin staying between seven and nine points. Griffin guard Julian McFadden connected on a three-pointer that put the road team up 10 (28-18) at the 5:47 mark.
Chestnut Hill (5-7, 1-2 CACC) ended the first half with seven of the final 11 points to take a 35-22 lead at half-time.
Holy Family (0-12, 0-4 CACC) cut the deficit to eight points (35-27) on a three-pointer by guard Ben Badeen (so. Newport, Maine/Maine Central) less than a minute into the second half.
The Griffins responded with an 18-4 run to extend their lead to 53-31 with 14:15 left the play.
From that point on, the Tigers outplayed the Griffins by scoring them 31-26. Swidowski recorded carried the offensive load with 17 of the team’s 31 points in the final 14 minutes. Forward Rickie Crews (jr. Westville, N.J./Deptford) contributed all seven of his points.
Forward Jawara Stephenson (sr. Baltimore, Md./Cambridge South Dorchester) recorded eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks in his first game of the season for the Tigers. Forward Ismaila Traore (gr. Mali/St. Benedict’s) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Swidowski added eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Guard Taylor Papion (fr. Lafayette, La./Teurlings Catholic) dished out a career-high eight assists.
Guard Ryan Cook led three Chestnut Hill players in double figure scoring with 22 points. Forward Larz Jeter added 15 points, while guard Mak DiRugeris poured in 12 points.
The Tigers shot well from the field, hitting 46.6 percent (27 of 58) of their shots. Chestnut Hill only connected on 40.5 percent (30 of 74) of their attempts. Holy Family also won the rebounding battle, 40-38.
Holy Family travels to Dominican (N.Y.) for a CACC contest on Saturday, January 9 at 3 p.m.

Wrestling Downs Anderson 21-18 to Advance to Semifinals of Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. (January 8, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team defeated second-seeded Anderson University (S.C.) (NCAA Division II), 21-18, on Friday afternoon in the American College Division at the 30th Annual Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. Stevens got pins from freshman Ryan Bridge (Galloway, N.J.) and sophomore Joe Favia (Brick, N.J.) as each squad won a total of five bouts. The Ducks will now face Nassau County Community College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the semifinals.

The Ducks fell behind early as the Trojans got a decision at 125 and a pin 133 lbs. to go up 9-0. Junior Kyle Brisson (Cicero, N.Y.) got Stevens (1-2) on the board in his first match of the year with a 3-1 decision over freshman Melchisedac LaVergne (Lake Charles, La.) and Bridge followed Brisson’s win by pinning junior Chris Francis (Columbia, S.C.) 2:05 into their match at 149 lbs.

Anderson’s Jonathan Jackson (Lake City, Calif.) earned a hard-fought decision (4-1) over senior Charles Favia (Brick, N.J.) to give the Trojans a 12-9 edge, but Joe Favia put the Ducks up for good with a big pin of freshman Tobias Henry (Orlando, Fla.) at the 5:37 mark of their match in the 165-lb. weight class.

Junior Bobby Bishop (Wayne Valley, N.J.) continued to wrestle well and put Stevens up 18-9 with a 9-4 decision at 174 lbs. and junior Vincent Termini (Mount Laurel, N.J.) earned three team points with a 3-2 decision over senior John Hamrick (Greenwood, S.C.) in the 184-lb. weight class.

Anderson got wins at 197 and 285 but it was too little too late as the Ducks held on for the 21-18 win.
