UEZ Spotlight on Dog House Sports Bar

GLOUCESTER CITY-The site of this historic building on King Street has been home to several types of religious and commercial uses. At one time the building was purchased from the Security Trust Bank by a group of people who became organized as the Beth El Synagogue. At various times, the building housed an art museum, coffee shop and a tavern.
It is not clear whether the beautiful stained glass windows were installed by the bank or the synagogue. At the present time, two of the five 51 inch large screen television sets are placed between some of the stained glass windows. . The other televisions, including two 42 inch sets, are placed around the walls for watching all kinds of sporting events.
According to Jerry Murphy, one of the three owners, a joke was made when they were deliberating whether they should buy the property or not. “We all thought we would be in the doghouse by purchasing a bar,” he said. Thus the name was born.
The other owners are Wayne Zarnowski and Ed Isabel. They and Jerry Murphy are members of the Philadelphia Electricians Local 98 on Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia.
Most of the bar maids reside in the area and some are from Philadelphia but all are
knowledgeable about the drinks they serve. A good variety of beers are available and Jerry said they try to accommodate special drink requests from the customers.
Live and D.J. music is provided on the week-ends. Tables are pushed back for dancing. Great food is served from the kitchen for lunch and dinner. Catering and take-out service are available.
Bill Ackley, featuring Ack’s Snacks, specializes in filet mignon cheese steaks. Raymond Lee and Richie Dodd, former cooks from the old O’Donnell’s Restaurant, also work in the kitchen.
Reservations for small parties can be made and held in the loft area. A pool table is in the loft area also. “You used to reach the loft area by climbing a spiral staircase,” Jerry said.
A modern staircase and steps to the loft are some of the renovations that were completed after the purchase. The Doghouse received permission from the G.C. Planning Board to expand and starting in January 2010 outside seating will be available in a gated porch area.
“We will be among one of the first to have outside seating, “Jerry said. He hopes the proposed development of King Street will bring in many visitors to Gloucester City and allow them to walk along King Street and visit all the establishments.
