Bill Sutherland, former Gloucester City Firefighter, Brooklawn Police Officer, American Legion Commander

Funeral services were held at the Budd Funeral Home, Woodbury for  John Sutherland, age 71 who died on December 15, 2009 after a courageous battle. Born in Haddonfield, he was raised in Gloucester City, NJ and attended Gloucester City High School. He formerly lived in Pitman and West Deptford and has lived in Westville for the past 8 years.

He served in the US Army and the National Guard with a combined 17 years of service. Bill began his career with the Brooklawn Police Department, he worked for the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Department and for Conrail as a Police Officer for 20 years.

He was an Exempt Fire Fighter and former member of Gloucester City Fire Co, Pitman Fire Patrol and Pitman Fire Co. #1. Bill served as the former Commander of American Legion Post 100 and former Commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was also a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Haddonfield.

Bill was a loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife S. Patricia Sutherland (nee Asay), children Debbie Sutherland, William J., III (Sandra) and Tracy P. Gilman. Also survived by son in law Daniel Rowe, daughter in law Maria Sutherland, sisters Edna Mellis and Mildred Kraft, his mother in law Lorene Asay, 9 grandsons, 1 great grandson and his dog and faithful companion Maggie. He was predeceased by his daughter K. Dawn Rowe, son Stephen J. Sutherland, brother Paul Sutherland, and sister Alice Warren and his beloved dog Ginger.
