No. 20 Field Hockey Cruises to 4-2 Win Over W&J; Ducks Complete Second-Straight Perfect Conference Ledger
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 28, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team completed an undefeated conference regular season for the second time in as many years with a 4-2 win over Empire 8 foe Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. Sophomore Mallory Swanson (Princeton Junction, N.J.) scored twice and freshman Marguerite Chavez (Ocean Port, N.J.) tallied a goal and an assist as the No. 20 Ducks improved to 14-3 on the season (6-0 Empire 8) with the victory.
Stevens made the most of their first-half chances scoring three times on 11 shots. Chavez got things started at the 4:36 mark with an unassisted tally. The rookie carried the ball down the right seam and into the circle before blasting a shot past W&J keeper Shelby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio) from 12 yards out. It was her eighth goal of the season.
Swanson then gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead when she was able to put in her own rebound. The sophomore controlled the ball in front, took a shot that was blocked, corralled the rebound and put it home. Then, 8:22 after junior Julianne Zackey (Easton, Pa.) tallied for the Presidents at the 21:40 mark to make it a one-goal game, Swanson hooked up with senior Erin Broderick (East Setauket, N.Y.) to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead. Senior Kara Borzillo (Mount Laurel, N.J.) hit to the top of the circle on a penalty corner and Broderick controlled. She then took one dribble before taking a shot in front that Swanson was able to deflect in. It was Swanson’s team-high tenth marker of the season and Broderick’s second assist.
Stevens would go into the break with that 3-1 lead. The Ducks accumulated 11 shots, compared to just two for W&J. Stevens also held a 4-1 edge in penalty corners.
Sophomore Jillian Price (West Islip, N.Y.) tallied the fourth Duck goal 13:49 into the second half thanks to a gorgeous assist from Chavez. Chavez eluded several defenders on a great run down the right side and three yards before she reached the end line, she made perfect cross to Price who one-timed it into the back of the net.
Junior Kim Marcius (Westmoreland City, Pa.) and junior Kolbey Seidel (Oley, Pa.) connected for the second President goal for the final margin.
The Ducks ended with a 21-6 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corners. Colyer made eight saves in the loss for W&J and junior Ellyn Griggs (Hillsborough, N.J.) stopped three shots and got the win between the pipes.
Stevens finished the Empire 8 season with a perfect 6-0 mark and has now won 15-straight contests against conference foes. The Ducks outscored league opponents 15-3 this season.
Stevens will be the No. 1 seed in the Empire 8 Field Hockey Championship and Hartwick will be the No. 2.
