Cheers and Jeers for the Month of September

By Bill Cleary

JEER-To those people from out-of-town that continue to disrespect the community of Gloucester City. That includes bar owners, slum landlords and disorderly people. Stay out of Gloucester City we don’t want your business nor do we need the “trash” that patronize your establishments or live in your apartments.

6a00d8341bf7d953ef0105369fbfbd970c-320wi JEER-It was reported in the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer that Camden City and Gloucester City are the only two communities in Camden County that still mix storm water and sewage in one large pipe. In other words when it rains, if the system overflows, it floods sewage everywhere. Besides paying a quarterly tax to the City of Gloucester City residents pay the Camden County MUA. Why hasn’t this problem been fixed? If 35 other communities in Camden County have been able to fix this quandary why hasn’t Camden and Gloucester Cities?

JEER-Lawn contractors with their noisy leaf blowers come into every neighborhood in the City and in surrounding towns blowing grass clippings and  leaves into the street instead of sweeping up the debris and placing in trash bags. How much longer would it take them to do the job right; maybe five or ten minutes at the most.

CHEER-A resident of Gloucester Towne writes “I contacted Councilman Marchese about some problems at Proprietors Park and along the waterfront. Within a week Public Works addressed the problems of overgrown weeds, missing bricks, painting, etc. And they (the workers) did a great job. Mr. Marchese is a man of his word.”

JEER-After the Wiffleball Reunion Committee hosted two parties for over 500 people and spent over $7,000 for the FREE Reunion on Friday night and FREE Block Party on Saturday someone stole a donation jar with an estimated $300 plus.

CHEER-To the Gloucester City Police Department for patrolling Proprietors Park and the waterfront. Their presence brings a feeling of security to many people, particularly the seniors that live in the Gloucester Towne apartments.

JEER-To those people that allow their dog to run loose at the city parks. We need clear signs saying leash you dog or pay fine. Gloucester City could also look in to a dog park enclosed for dog's to run free. We have plenty of room all we need is fencing, and someone checking dog records.

CHEER-To the Gloucester City Police for their hard work and always being helpful to the residents.

JEER-Why doesn’t the Gloucester City Fire Department hold a Fire Prevention Open House at the firehouse for the public? In the past this was an annual event every October during fire prevention week. They try to fool the public by saying they go around to the schools in the city to talk about fire prevention. I know for a fact they don’t go to every school. Thirty some firemen and 10 chiefs costing taxpayers $4 million a year, what a waste.

CHEER-This was the 10th and final year for the Brooklawn Wiffleball Reunion. Kudos to all those involved for their hard work and sacrifices over that period of time especially Tom and Ken MacAdams and their families along with Bruce and Jill Darrow.

JEER-To the Fire Chief and Chief of Operations for not providing the Gloucester City News or ClearysNoteBook with the number of responses each week or month like the Gloucester City Police Department does.

CHEER-The First Presbyterian Church, Monmouth and Burlington Streets, has just been given a new paint job. This historic old building looks great thanks to Pastor Morgan.

JEER-Gloucester City Council continues the policy of not disciplining employees who are arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). There should be a rule in place that if you are found guilty of a DUI you lose your job. Especially for employees who are required to have a drivers license such as firemen, EMT, and police officers.

JEER-The Gloucester City Fire Department (GCPD) continues to take a beating this month. Another resident writes, “Thumbs down to the GCFD, for not holding an Open House for Fire Prevention Week.  I think community awareness should be first and foremost. GCFD has a 24/7 paid staff and a $4 million a year budget, there should be no issues with providing an event of this nature.”

Contributors this month in no particular order include: Lauren Saban, Richard Dick, David Townsend, Bruce Darrow, Barbara DiBartolo, A resident of Gloucester Towne and A Retired Firefighter.
