TCNJ Drops 2-1 OT Heartbreaker to #10 Stevens Tech

Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey men’s soccer team surrendered a game-tying goal with nine seconds to play in regulation before dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to 10th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology. The Ducks (5-1) were awarded a penalty kick with 8:31 to play in the first overtime period and escaped Lions’ Stadium with their fifth victory of the season. 

Kevin Luber (Delran, NJ/Delran) gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the first half when he blasted a shot from 25 yards out at the 8:19 mark. It was the first goal of the season for Luber, who led TCNJ in scoring a year ago. The Lions dominated the majority of the opening period, outshooting the Ducks 9-3, but the momentum shifted as Stevens game out hungry following the intermission.

The defensive backfield of senior Adam Dorflinger, juniors Matt Erny (Delran, NJ/Delran), Mike Razzoli (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy), and Phil Cunha (Milford, NJ/Immaculata) played exceptional soccer in front of goalkeeper Eric Goldwaser (Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills). The TCNJ defense staved off several offensive attacks from the Ducks to maintain their one-goal cushion. 
In overtime, Stevens forward Victor Daza received a through pass and went in one-on-one with Goldwaser. The Lions keeper took Daza down and the Ducks were awarded a penalty kick at the 8:31 of the first overtime. Zach Adler rifled home the free kick for his fourth goal of the season, sending a team of stunned TCNJ players off the field with their second loss of the season.\

TCNJ will begin conference play this Saturday, September 19 when they host NJAC opponent Kean University at 1 p.m. at TCNJ Soccer Complex. The Ducks travel to York College on Saturday for a 2 p.m. showdown before retuning home to host Manhattanville College on Wednesday, September 23.


Swarthmore, PA...In an early-season showdown between undefeated and nationally-ranked women’s soccer teams, The College of New Jersey beat Swarthmore College by the score of 2-0 on Wednesday on the Garnet’s home field scoring a goal in each half.

TCNJ (6-0) is ranked eighth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III poll with Swarthmore (5-1) ranked 15th.

The Lions scored the game’s first goal 25:05 into the contest as junior Casey Caruso (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) knocked in a feed from classmate Briann McDonough (North Arlington, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy). The goal was Caruso’s third of the season.

TCNJ tacked on an insurance goal with 3:09 left in the game as freshman Alexa Rozzi (Freehold, NJ / Freehold Township) scored with an assist from Nikki Migliori (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert).
Senior keeper Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) made a pair of saves as she collected her fourth shutout of the season.

TCNJ held a decisive edge in shots, outshooting Swarthmore by a margin of 26-2.
The Lions open New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday, September 19 as they head to Kean University to take on the Cougars in a 7 p.m.
