By Linda Boker-Angelo NEWS Correspondent The Gloucester City Planning Board last week upheld Zoning Officer Joseph Stecklair’s earlier decision to disallow a Market Street resident from operating a dog obedience school out of her home unless she first applies for the appropriate use variance. Stecklair said the property is in an area zoned as residential. Although some non-foot traffic businesses, such as mail order or Internet companies, can feasibly operate out of a private home, the nature of this particular business, which would entail obedience class attendees visiting the home for extended periods of time, would require sufficient parking facilities....

Friday, September 25, 2009 As we reported in May, Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) have introduced S. 941, the “Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Reform and Firearms Modernization Act of 2009” in the U.S. Senate. Representatives Steve King (R-Iowa) and Zack Space (D-Ohio) have introduced a companion bill—H.R. 2296—in the U.S. House. The bills would roll back unnecessary restrictions, correct errors, and codify longstanding congressional policies in the firearms arena. These bipartisan bills are a vital step to modernize and improve BATFE operations. Of highest importance, S. 941and H.R. 2296 totally...

I am delighted to hear our new schooner is doing so well. Capt. Chuck Reed keeps me up to date on the wonderful trips and parties on her. The only complaint I’ve heard (said with a smile) is everyone wants to stay longer. This seems to be another important step by our mayor James and our city council to bring life and fun back to the waterfront. So many of the older people have wonderful memories that center on the park area. It’s lovely to see it come to life again. Barbara Rein, Gloucester City

Keeping it Plain, Simple and Brilliant The health care debate in America has had an interesting item mentioned again and again in recent weeks the Japanese health care system! HARRISBURG – With tomorrow being the first day of autumn, many Pennsylvanians will be spending increasing amounts of time outdoors. This also is when black bears become more active, setting the stage for an increase in bear sightings and possibly encounters. Mark Ternent, Pennsylvania Game Commission black bear biologist, noted that, as fall progresses, bears will begin to increase their food intake to prepare for the upcoming denning season, which begins in mid- to late-November. For some bears, the search for food may lead them closer to people or homes. Ternent offered suggestions on how to reduce the likelihood that...

Thursday, September 24, 2009 American Legion National Commander Clarence Hill is urging President Obama to give commanders the troops needed to win the war in Afghanistan. “According to The Washington Post, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the U.S. and NATO commander, is warning us that, without more forces within the next year, the mission in Afghanistan ‘will likely result in failure,’” Hill said. “Considering that Afghanistan was the breeding ground for the 9/11 attacks, we cannot allow that to happen. We have seen a successful troop surge and counterinsurgency strategy work in Iraq. We...

This isn't the first time anyone has said that, but, in the wake of a drug-suspension-shaving scandal that we uncovered at MLN Sports over the last 2-1/2 months, I am hoping that it will be the last. As we reported in our investigative feature story "At What Cost Peace," appearing in the current edition of SZ (www.mlnsports.com), there are no rules covering drug use in baseball. None. Zero. So how, you might ask, does a Manny Ramirez or a J.C. Romero receive an announced 50-game suspension from the...

But I can't sit idly by when the ugliness of political campaigns interferes with the important work teachers perform all over the state. It's hard to ignore the campaign for governor that's already well underway. And while I've always supported the efforts of the NJEA to educate its members about political campaigns, I've never been as disappointed as I am now with the NJEA's blatant attempts to smear Chris Christie's positions on education. The NJEA has actually sent teachers across the state a document lying about Chris' positions...

To help teens become smarter drivers, Allstate New Jersey recently held three distracted driving challenges for teens – including one in Philadelphia and one in Skillman, NJ. The link below contains some startling statistics on teen drivers that I am certain would be of great interest to your readers. The...

Image via Wikipedia September 17th, 2009 Deeplink by Tim Jones Last week, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced an update to Music-Rules!, its flagship "curriculum" for teaching copyright law to schoolkids. We wrote about Music-Rules! and similar industry propaganda efforts in May, outlining some of their falsehoods and biases. For instance, the RIAA tells kids, "Never copy someone else's creative work without permission from the copyright holder" — omitting the important right to make creative fair use of existing content. It also coins a misleading term, "songlifting," (which the curriculum says is "just as bad as shoplifting"). Perhaps...
