Letters: Kudos to Dr. Cancell

I wanted to write in and tell everyone just how wonderful of an experience I had at Dr. Cancell's office recently, he is the podiatrist in town.

6a00d8341bf7d953ef01157153a790970b-200wi Eleven days ago while I was visiting my parents who live in Cape May Court House, NJ I injured my foot. On the following Sunday the pain was so bad I had to go to the emergency department at Cape Regional Hospital (formally Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital. On a side note I was recently laid off from my position as Catering Sales Manager at Top of the Tower and just at the end of July I lost my health insurance.

Anyhow, I was taken care of in the waiting room of the hospital. I was told I had a fracture of my foot and given a partial cast right there in the hallway and told since I am a charity care case to go to Community Health Care for follow up. As soon as I got home I made the phone call and was told I can come in the following Friday, four days away.

Once Friday came I went in and Dr. Vines came in and said I had a fracture and they can do nothing else for me, I had to see a podiatrist...who did not have an appointment for two weeks. All of this time, the pain was terrible! I decided to come home and hopefully would get faster care here.

On this past Monday the pain was so bad I had to go to Virtua in Voorhees. They took more X-rays and the doctor came in and said that I had a fracture as well as a bone spur, they could do nothing else besides give me “souped” up Motrin and told me to see a podiatrist. Having gone this far on my unemployment my money was quickly running out since everything is out of pocket expense. I started calling and no one was under $150 JUST for the visit and no one was available until at least Monday morning. I cannot afford this. My best friend said that there was a podiatrist in town and it was worth calling to find out the cost.

I called and the receptionist was cheerful and when I told her I did not have insurance her nice attitude towards me did not change. She got me in the very next day, and the cost was only $50! My appointment was for 4:30pm. Once there the nurse at the desk had me fill out papers and took me RIGHT in, which I have never had happen to me, I usually wait at least an hour for any doctor.

When Doctor Cancell came in he made me feel comfortable, looked at my x-rays and noticed I had a tear in my Achilles Tendon and a bone spur. He could not see if there was a fracture since the pictures did not show my heel where the fracture is. He gave me directions for care, a boot (at cost of only $50!!!) , a prescription for pain, and set the follow up visit for six weeks. He answered all of my questions and took his time and made sure I was comfortable and well informed. This is a great relief since no one has taken any time to help me since this happened to me.

It is good to know that there are doctors out there that actually care and understand that loosing my health insurance was not my fault!

I would love to publicly thank this doctor and his staff! Kudos to them!
