July 14th -The Camden Riversharks were defeated by the Bridgeport Bluefish today, by a final score of 8-6. Camden reliever Felix Rodriguez (1-4) suffered the loss, as he gave up 4 runs and 3 hits in just .1 innings of work. Bridgeport reliever Casey Hoorelbeke (2-1) recorded the win, as he allowed just one run and two hits in .2 innings of work. With the loss, the Riversharks’ season tally moves to 1-4, as does Bridgeport’s.
The Riversharks took the lead in the first inning of the contest, courtesy of an RBI double by left fielder Jon Knott. However, their lead was short lived, as Bridgeport answered right back in the 2nd inning. A solo homerun by Luis Rodriguez tied the game at 1-1, and the Bluefish then took the lead later in the inning. Wilson Batista singled to center field, and then scored when Ryner Bautista singled to right field. Bautista’s 12th RBI of the season gave the visitor’s a 2-1 lead.
Camden drove another run across the plate in the 3rd inning, and tied the game at 2-2. Right fielder Chris Walker lived up to his namesake and drew a leadoff walk. He then advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and moved to third when center fielder Wayne Lydon grounded out. The next batter was second baseman Junior Spivey, who plated Walker and tied the game with a slow rolling ground out to second base.
After a couple of scoreless innings, the Sharks retook the lead in the 6th inning. Knott singled up the middle and then moved to second when Bridgeport’s Adam Greenberg misplayed the ball in center field. Two batters later, Knott scored on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Brian Burgamy.
Once again, the Bluefish showed their grit as they quickly answered back. A sacrifice fly by Luis Lopez scored Greenberg in the 7th inning and tied the game at 3-3. The visitors then took the lead in the 8th inning when Batista picked up his second RBI of the season, a double to right field that drove in Jesse Hoorelbeke.
Despite falling behind again, the Riversharks showed they still had a little bite left in their bats, and once again claimed the lead in the 8th inning. With the bases loaded, Burgamy drew a walk to force home Spivey for the game tying run. The next batter was first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Bryant Nelson, and gave Camden a 5-4 lead.
Ahead by one run in the 9th inning, the Riversharks put the game in the hands of closer Felix Rodriguez, who could not close the door on the Bluefish. With a runner on third base, Lopez laced a single to left field, scoring Greenberg, and once again tying the game. Later in the inning, Camden’s sixth error of the night cost them two more runs, and gave Bridgeport a 7-5 lead. They would add one more run in the inning, and take an 8-5 lead that they would not relinquish. The Riversharks tacked on a late run at the end of the game, but could not complete the comeback, as the ultimately lost by a final score of 8-6.
The Riversharks and Bluefish will play game two of their three game series tomorrow night at 7:05pm. Lefty Josh Brey (2-4, 4.41) will take the mound for the Riversharks, and he will be opposed by right handed pitcher Matt Pike (4-4, 1.31) from Bridgeport.
