The second largest crowd in Sovereign Bank Stadium turned out to celebrate070408_1502_PublicSafet1 a belated Independence Day, but the York Revolution fell 5-0 to the Camden Riversharks in front of 7,046 fans on Monday evening. The three-game winning streak is snapped, but the Revs will continue their season-long 10-game homestand on Tuesday night with the middle game of the series.

York starter Dave Gassner (3-7) turned in another superb effort, but the Revs could not score against Camden starter Kevin Mannix (1-0).

Gassner took a shutout into the sixth, but several foul balls elevated his pitch count. The sixth inning began with an error. Jon Knott then singled, and Junior Spivey followed with another single, driving in Jose Leon to give Camden a 1-0 lead. The unearned run was the only run allowed by Gassner in five-plus innings. He allowed just five hits and two walks, while recording a season-best six strikeouts. Chris Britton retired the next three in relief to end the sixth, stranding runners at second and third.

Camden blew the game open in the seventh, however. Wayne Lydon ignited the four-run inning with a bunt hit, and after stealing his league-leading 29th base, scored on Bryant Nelson’s single to right field. Knott capped the scoring by blasting a three-run homer to left-center.

Mannix, just signed earlier in the day, fired five scoreless innings, allowing only three hits, while walking two and striking out five. He kept York’s hitters off-balance all night with an unpredictable assortment of off-speed pitches.

Camden’s bullpen combination of Tim Bittner, Chris Shaver, and Felix Rodriguez finished off the combined shutout. The Revs managed just five hits, two by Keoni DeRenne.

Jason Olson retired both batters he faced in the seventh, and Daryl Harang worked two scoreless innings of relief for York.

The Big Hitters will perform on Tuesday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium, when lefty Shane Youman faces Camden righty Tom Davey. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
