Gloucester City News
Board member Betty Sheppard was a life-long resident of Bellmawr where she and her husband Jack raised four children and grandchildren who attended the Bellmawr schools. In 1979, Mrs. Sheppard was elected to the Board of Education because she had desire to improve the educational process for all children. One of her first actions as a Board member was to approve services for special education students. She spent the next 35 years working toward approving educational advances not only special education services in our district but for all children in our district.
Mrs. Sheppard met with an untimely death in December of 2008. In February The Board appointed a committee to develop activities that would memorialize the works of this powerful woman. One of the activities decided upon is the creation of a park at the Bell Oaks Upper Elementary School where there are no recreational opportunities for students and where all the students in Bellmawr attend school for grades 5-8. This is also the location for two multiply handicapped classrooms where life skills are taught to students so they may be self-sufficient.
The park will include the creation of a butterfly garden, a community vegetable and flower garden and picnic tables made from recyclable materials for students to avail themselves of not only during lunch periods but for staff to use during instructional periods.
The committee is looking to partner with government, non-profit and for profit organizations to fund this worthy project. We would be so appreciative of any donation you could make to the children of Bellmawr. Send checks payable to the Betty Sheppard Memorial Fund c/o the Bellmawr Board of Education 256 Anderson Avenue, Bellmawr, New Jersey 08031.
