With sales of the 2009-10 license set to begin in mid-June, Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe is reminding all first-time license buyers to make plans to attend a Hunter-Trapper Education (HTE) course now. To register for a course in your area, visit the Game Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), select the “Hunter Education Classes” icon in the center of the homepage, and then follow the instructions. With the support of thousands of volunteers, HTE courses are being held throughout the state. There is no fee for the basic HTE course. Pre-registration is required for many classes, so contact information is provided. Online registration also is available for most courses offered by the agency. Taught by dedicated teams of trained volunteers, most HTE classes last at least 10 hours over two or more days, and participants must attend all instruction before taking the test at the end of the course.... But, Superintendent Joseph Rafferty advised the Mount Ephraim Board of Education (BOE) that Mary Bray School will be running the before and after school child care in the future. Instead of the revenue leaving the district, it has the potential to decrease the overall tax burden, which could result in lower taxes for residents. A parent of a second grade student told the School Board that he feels the school is run like a prison due to the limited access parents have to the school, such as not being allowed in the gym for the Halloween parade if it was to have rained that day. Great pitching and defense were on display before more than 1,000 lively fans enjoying a Saturday night – and occasionally questioning a call or two by the umpires. The Gloucester Catholic and Gloucester City softball teams are among the five best in South Jersey – and they proved it. Also, it was an excellent tune-up for both teams before the state playoffs. The Lions hosted a Group 1 game Thursday, May 21. The Rams began Parochial A tournament play on Wednesday, May 27. But, on the field, thoughts of the playoffs were not in the players’ minds. The school budget was defeated on April 21 by a large margin of 441 residents voting “no” and only 111 residents voting “yes.” This was believed to have been the largest budget defeat of the past 5 years as each has been shot down by the taxpayers. After a school budget gets defeated it then goes before the local governing body; the Mount Ephraim Board of Commissioners (BOC); Mayor Joe Wolk, Commissioner Bruce Greenwald and Commissioner Andy Gilmore, who can recommend how much they would like to see cut from the proposed increase. In 2008, anglers submitted 168 applications representing 25 different species. In addition to recognizing every skillful angler with a certificate documenting their catch, special recognition is given to the Adult, Junior, and Catch and Release anglers who catch the largest fish of each species. By Bill Cleary Opposing Primary candidates of the present Gloucester City Mayor and Council submitted a petition on May 19 to the City Clerk Paul Kain requesting a referendum be placed on the ballot to change the present form of government to a Council-Manager form of municipal government. If the signatures on the petition are validated there would be a special election to vote on the referendum on June 16 just two weeks after the June 2 Primary, followed by another special election in July to vote on the candidates who would be running at large for council. The terms of the present mayor and council members would cease and they (Mayor Bill James, and council members Bill Hagan, John Hutchinson, Bruce Parry, Nick Marchese, Kellie Ferry and Jay Brophy) would have to vacate their seats by August 11, 2009. May 18, 2009 The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife (Division) and Fish and Game Council recently proposed tentative 2009-10 migratory bird hunting season dates. The Division and Fish and Game Council are responsible for adopting migratory bird seasons within the frameworks prescribed in the Code of Federal Regulations promulgated by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service (Service). The status of migratory birds is annually measured through the completion of numerous, continent-wide population monitoring surveys. Following review of these survey results and with consultation with the four Flyway Councils, hunting season frameworks for migratory birds are annually promulgated by the Service. However, a strong push by concerned parishioners and Pastor Msgr. Opposing Primary candidates of the present Gloucester City Mayor and Council submitted a petition today (Tuesday) to the City Clerk requesting a referendum be placed on the ballot to change the present form of government to a Council-Manager form of municipal government. The petition contained 260 signatures. Besides those signatures the names of Maggie Gorman-Kain, Shawn Green, Noreen Renzi, Wil Levins , Walt Jost, and William Dilks appeared at the bottom of the petition. Gorman-Kain, Green, Renzi are running in the June Democratic Primary election opposing incumbents Councilmen Nick Marchese (2nd Ward), Jay Brophy (3rd Ward) and Dan Spencer who is backed by the Democrat Club for First Ward council seat. Jeff Brickner began a full, three-year term, after completing the unexpired term he had just served. Jamie Casey returned to begin another three-year term, and Tracy Shinkarow was sworn in to complete the balance of the term vacated by the passing of the late Betty Sheppard. Shinkarow has served on the Board before, having been appointed by the Camden County Schools Superintendent. Prior to the swearing in, Interim Board Secretary N. John Amato read the election results from April 21: The proposed school budget was defeated by a margin of 72 votes, 309-237. Jamie Casey received 361 votes, and Jeff Brickner got 343 votes. 5-19-2009 8:10am 430 W. Browning Rd Bellmawr Camden County Police reported a 2 car accident in front of the Hyde Park Apartments this am. The SUV involved in the accident flipped over and landed on its side trapping the driver, Bellmawr Firefighters and Runnemede Firefighters operated to remove the roof to get the driver out. Bellmawr EMS and Virtua Paramedics transported the driver to the hospital. Bellmawr Police are investigating.
