“Most of our senior citizens should now qualify for this program if they own their own homes”. Mayor Bill James Those qualified are directly reimbursed by the state for the difference between the amount of local property taxes paid in the base year (the year applicants become eligible and first filed for the program) and the amount of the property taxes paid for the reimbursement year. Forms to apply for retroactive refunds for 2007 will be available in the Gloucester Tax Collectors office by the end of February and the 2008 forms will be in sometime next month. Mayor James said the changed eligibility requirements will translate into big savings for local seniors. “This should benefit quite a few people”, he said. $1000 Donation Helps Young Musicians Mount Ephraim, NJ – February 19, 2009 - Surrounded by young music students from RW Kershaw School Jazz Band in Mt. Ephraim, director, Mary Manion, was smiling. “This is a great day in the Music Department!” she said. The students agreed. This year, the Mt. Ephraim P.T.O. made a generous donation of $1000 to the Music Department to help meet its equipment needs. The administration and school board of Mt. Ephraim have a long tradition of special support for the district’s music program. This includes funding for regular performing ensembles such as the Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Choruses and the Garage Band. Both the before and after school programs will offer more options to parents. Board members said 45 children were attending the Just Kids Program as of February 4, for grades K-6, from 7 a.m. until the start of school and from the time of dismissal until 6 p.m. Also, Board members said the Police Department performed Critical Incident Training at the Kershaw Middle School on January 21 and February 4, and that this training will greatly aid the police in the event of a lock down situation. By Linda Boker-Angelo NEWS Correspondent Gloucester City School Board President Louisa Llewellyn told the NEWS she was thrilled by the improving scores posted by Gloucester City High 11th graders in 2007-08. She stopped by the office the day after last week’s Board of Education (BOE) meeting, pointing out that the students scored better in both Mathematics and Language Arts. Some 78.4 percent of last year’s 11th graders were either advanced or proficient in Math, compared to 67.8 percent in 2006-07, and 52.8 percent in 2002-03. “It is a remarkable turnaround,” said Llewellyn, a former teacher in the school district, who said she was very proud of the students, teachers and staff at the High School. In Language Arts, 86.2 percent of the students were either advanced or proficient, compared to 77.9 percent in 2006-07, and 69.5 percent in 2002-03. George Berglund, spokesperson for the Gloucester City Police Department said when officers responded to the report they found the body of a female floating near the shore line. The BOC determined that it would be the best interest of the borough to purchase office supplies through Office Basics, Incorporated of Boothwyn, PA through the Camden County Cooperative Pricing System for the next two years at 74% off the catalogue prices specified in the bid agreement. Office Basics was awarded the contract following a detailed bid process with Camden County. The Uniform Shared Services Consolidation Act permits two local units to enter into a contract for any service which any party to the agreement is empowered to render within its jurisdiction. The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has opened registration for sportsmen and sportswomen to participate in the snow goose Conservation Order (CO). The CO will be held from March 11 - April 18, 2009. A Conservation Order is a special management action authorized by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act that is needed to control certain wildlife populations when traditional management programs are unsuccessful in preventing overabundance of that population. The CO allows for an extended time period outside of traditional hunting seasons, as well as additional methods, for taking snow geese without bag limits. This action is granted under the authority of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Since its inception four years ago, "Adopt a U.S. Soldier" has connected more than 100,000 servicemembers to 265,000 supportive Americans who have sent them regular care packages, wrote letters and, on occasion, run errands for family members. Born Sept. 7, 1920, daughter of the late Walter and Harriet (Courter) Sigafoos, sister of the late Walter Sigafoos and loving wife of the late Norman H. Gardner. February 2, 2009 A public forum to discuss freshwater fisheries research and management, culture and recreational angling in New Jersey will be held on Saturday, February 28th at the Batsto Village Visitors Center located on Rt. 542 in Wharton State Forest, Burlington County. The forum will begin at 10 a.m. The DEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife is conducting these meetings to improve communication with the angling public and to solicit public input in shaping freshwater fisheries programs in the future. A Memorial Mass was held at Annunciation BVM Church, Bellmawr for Kenneth L. Hauser, 51, of Palmetto, FL formerly of Bellmawr and Collingswood, who died January 15, 2009. Born in Philadelphia and moved to Palmetto in 1988. Ken was an avid fan of his children’s sports teams. He was associated with the youth group at St. Frances Cabrini Church in Parish, FL and the Braden River Soccer Club. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret “Maggie”. He is survived by his daughter, Katie and his son, Will and his devoted parents, William and Katherine Hauser of Bellmawr. Dear brother of William, Jr. and his wife Darlene of Bradenton, FL, his sister Susan Yeatman and her husband Duane of Dallas, TX, and his brother James and his wife Marian of Bellmawr. Madison continues to receive treatment at CHOP’s outpatient clinic. She is doing well and is scheduled to finish treatment this coming May. Gabryelle and Sydney, 7th grade students at Alice Costello School, Brooklawn, founded Purses 4 Patients in 2007.
