http://www.fbi.gov/ 12/16/08 Dockworkers in Wilmington, North Carolina were getting sucked into a trap. Needing money between paychecks, some went to James Lee, a former dockworker who had become a leader in their union—the International Longshoremen’s Association, or ILA. Lee had opened a small store across from the union hall and begun offering loans to his fellow members. But there was a catch. Lee charged an exorbitant interest rate, upwards of 25 percent per week. Because he controlled the distribution of paychecks, Lee could make sure the dockworkers paid up: he would cash their checks by forging their signatures, take his cut, and then give what was left to the dockworker. For the workers, this nefarious setup just kept them coming back for more loans. And if they complained? No luck—the mob had Lee’s back. This scenario, which played out in the 1970s, was not an isolated one. The Gambino and...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: This question was asked by my granddaughter, who refers to the “fort” (Fort Nassau Playground) as the princess’ castle. How do I answer this wide-eyed toddler? What do I tell her? The naughty kids broke it! How long will it take for the youth of our city to completely destroy Gloucester City’s playground named Ft. Nassau? On a recent visit, my granddaughter told me the “bridge” was broken. To my astonishment, one of the boards was completely broken off which left a gaping hole. Luckily, my granddaughter did not injure herself, which is a certain possibility for other children. Will this board be replaced? Will the exposed nails be removed? Who’s responsible for the upkeep and repair of this playground? The idea for the Fort Nassau playground was very clever and a wonderful experience for children… not teenagers. Since its completion years ago, careless and thoughtless...

William E. Cleary Sr. | CNBNewsnet GLOUCESTER CITY NJ--During my 40 plus years as a journalist, I have covered many events some are memorable others I like to forget. Going through some old photos recently I stumbled upon this photo of President Jimmy Carter with the Knights of Columbus Council #674 banner in the background. Many residents are unaware that President Jimmy visited Gloucester City in 1979 during a campaign stomp through New Jersey when he was running for a second term. A local family from Gloucester City, the Rafferty's were chosen to host a chat with the President to be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Monmouth Street. Several thousand people crowded Monmouth Street hoping for a glimpse of the President. When his motor caravan stopped in front of the K of C Hall, the President got out of his limousine and waded into the crowd. The...

Bill's Point of View: A TIP was received suggesting that the City of Gloucester City has a new administrator. Following the lead I contacted several members of City Council and was told that no one has been appointed. That there were 8 people that applied for the job and the selection had been narrowed down to a select few. A further meeting with those individuals will be held this weekend. Mayor and Council are expected to appoint the new administrator this coming week. I have high expectations for this person, whoever is appointed. The fact that the final applicants all have a Master’s degree is a big plus. Gloucester City is facing some tough decisions in 2009. For example how to keep taxes from increasing and at the same time maintain services. Then there is the ongoing contract negotiation with the Police Chief, the Deputy Chief and the union that...

The South Jersey Port Corporation has in its infinite wisdom decided that the Department of Homeland Security, The US Government TSA, The United States Coast guard and multiple other federal, county and state security and law enforcement groups don’t have the right to protect American Citizens. The proposed Methadone Clinic to be built near the border of Gloucester City and Camden City has moved a step-closer to becoming a reality. Mayor Bill James and City Council have spoken out against the clinic for the past two years. At a meeting in August Gloucester City Councilman Nick Marchese told the South Jersey Board of Directors. "We spend millions to revitalize our downtown and riverfront then you want to flood the area with drug addicts," Marchese said. "This will kill Gloucester City. We'd like you and the state to look at alternate sites." It appears his plea fell on death ears. The Courier Post reported on Tuesday, The eight-member board unanimously authorized its Executive Director Joseph Balzano to begin negotiations with Parkside Recovery, a methadone clinic that...
