Ralph Giordano our beloved dad and
pop-pop, Ralph Giordano, of Carneys Point, NJ, passed away on November,
26 2008 at the age of 98. Born Raffaele in Salerno, Italy August 29,
1910 to the late Angelo and Maria Giordano, he immigrated to the United
States via Ellis Island in 1913 later settling in South Philadelphia.
At the age of 17, he crossed the river into Salem County, NJ where he
lived and worked ever since.
He was employed on the family
farm in Oldmans Twp as a young man and worked briefly at DuPont
Chambers Works and Campagnoni’s Bakery on Walnut St. in Penns Grove.
Later branching out on his own, he began delivering Italian bread to
all the local farms in the area from Salem to Gloucester County gaining
the nickname: Ralph "the Breadman". He continued his deliveries well
into his nineties.
He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 595 in Vineland and headed his own band known as the Ralph Jordan Orchestra. The Ralph Jordan Orchestra entertained many local families throughout the tri-state area over the years. He also was fortunate to have had the opportunity to play behind legendary crooner Al Martino at a West Philadelphia charity event.
Not only did he have a passion for music, of which his neighbors have professed to have so dearly missed the sound of his horn from across the street, he also loved to repair jewelry. Friends, family, and even patrons on the bread route would routinely give him their watches or necklaces to fix in his tiny makeshift workshop in his basement. He also loved to make his yearly trip to Florida with his lovely wife Eleanor, family, and friends. In 1996, Ralph accomplished another lifelong dream by visiting his native land of Italy for the first time since his immigration.
Ralph is survived by his three children, Anna Mae Shoemaker and husband John of Pilesgrove, NJ, Geraldine Giordano of Woodstown, NJ, and James Giordano and wife Henrietta of Carneys Point, NJ. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife Eleanor, brothers John, Carmen, Joe, and sisters Rosina, Angelina, and Mildred.
