The crop circles in Tom Brodhecker's cornfields are no unearthly mystery. They are signs of an increasingly brazen bear population that has been feeding on the crops and livestock of farmers in northwestern New Jersey.
Farmers in Sussex and Warren counties say the voracious bears have been in their fields for a decade but are getting worse. And they have increased tensions between farmers and environmental regulators about when and how often property owners can use lethal means -- usually shotguns -- to address the problem.
