For nearly a decade, the lot on the northwest corner of 12th and Catharine streets has been empty. Through thick and thin — and many changes in development plans — Hawthorne’s residents have stood by it, so to speak. For most, putting a park in the space was ideal.
Last Thursday, protests against the one-time plan of the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s to build low-income housing were nowhere to be heard.
“Hawthorne, you finally got what you deserved,” Pat Bullard, president of the Hawthorne Empowerment Coalition, said joyously to the crowd.
The long-time community activist was at the site for the announcement by Mayor Michael Nutter that the dirt lot will become a much greener space.
