The Trinity United Methodist Church at Eighth and Division Streets in Gloucester City has announced the appointment of its new pastor, the Rev. Dr. Richard G. Leaver. Dr. Leaver is a Gloucester resident who at one time was employed as a supervisor at the John-Jeffrey Corporation on Charles Street. He left there in the mid 80s to pursue his long-time call to ordained ministry by attending Easter Baptist Theological Seminary (EBTS) in Wynnewood, PA. In his second year of seminary, Dr. Leaver pastored the former Second UMC here and the First UMC in National Park. Katherine "Kay" Ferry, (nee McKernan) lost her two year courageous battle with cancer Thursday, July 31, 2008. A resident of Gloucester City, she was 62 years of age. Kay, photo, was born in Kingston, PA and attended Sacred Heart Grammar School in South Camden. She was a graduate of Camden High School class of 1965. Kay was a faithful and devoted parishioner of St. Mary's R.C. Church in Gloucester City. Kay was a member of the Gloucester City Democrat Club. The NJ Government Records Council, (GRC) has sent a letter to Gloucester City Administrator Paul Kain asking him to participate in mediation procedure with the publisher of the Gloucester City News, Albert Countryman. The NEWS had made an OPRA request to the City Administrator asking for a copy of the E-mail sent by him to Councilman Nick Marchese. Kain who is the Custodian of Records refused the request. Mediation is the next step in the procedure. Kain doesn't have to participate. If he chooses not to than the GRC will proceed to rule on the matter without his input. Kain has five days to respond to the GRC. Councilman Marchese on June 6 via E-mail had asked Administrator Kain if his report was available on the meeting held a week before about the Freedom Pier development at the former Coast Guard Base. Mayor and City Council were informed at the July 17th caucus meeting that a decision ruling against Gorman was decided by the NJ Government Records Council (GRC) at their June meeting. The documents involve with the case number 100 pages or more. As for the cost to taxpayers in legal fees over the four year period it is not known. Frank Robertson, Gloucester City Financial Officer said on Monday (July 28th ), “it would take a long time to research all the bills for the past 48 months to find how much was spent by the City on this particular legal case”. Epiphany Council #3485 is currently located in an old convent at St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church in the Fairview section of Camden. Epiphany Grand Knight Joseph Viggiano explained to the Board that as a result of parishes merging in the Diocese of Camden, the Council had to find a new meeting place. The property which the Council is buying from an estate was formerly a delicatessen, has been vacant for years, and is in bad condition. Ponderosa pines are plentiful in the forests of the western United States and are among the most widely distributed pines in North America. They have an average height of 180 feet, and they usually can live for 300 to 600 years. When the team of about 20 Guard firefighters reached the pine's location, a few miles north of the Forest Glen campsite, they knew this tree was something special. It brings together veterans with spinal cord injuries, amputations or other mobility or neurological conditions to compete in 17 different events. Veterans Affairs Secretary James B. Peake, who opened the competition July 25, called it a big part of the veterans’ rehabilitation and said the games provide “a therapeutic extension” of the top-notch health care veterans receive in VA medical centers. Photos by Bill Bates TREE LANDS ON TOP OF HOUSE / POWER LINES - The recent hail storm over the weekend sent a large tree crashing threw the home on the 300 block of Lowell Avenue, just off Bell Road. Power was disrupted for a short while before it was restored. Mount Ephraim Police and Fire Department's were summonsed to the scene where no injuries were reported. Units stayed on location until PSE&G arrived to secure the power and worker's from the Department of Public Works could remove part of the tree that was blocking the roadway. Gloucester City lost one of its proudest adopted sons on June 29, 2008. Frank Banas, former high school teacher and football coach has passed away. If you were lucky enough to have been a student or player of his, you have got to be a better person for that relationship. Frank loved the City of Gloucester, the High School and the thousands of students and players that he befriended. Frank was a throwback, a meat and potatoes kind of guy, who you loved immediately and he retuned the favor. There was no bravado in Frank, he was solid, honest, sincere and one hellava friend. The state notified the city earlier this month. This year’s 2008-2009 proposed budget totals $16,439,000 or $613,313 more than last year's budget of $15,825,687. Under the proposed plan introduced in April the local purpose tax was to increase by 41 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. At that time taxes were to rise to $287 on an average home assessed at $70,000. According to the advertised budget in the April 10 issue of the Gloucester City News, the City employs 105 fulltime workers and 74 part-time. The number of employees was the same in 2007. According to Ray Slemmer at Absecon Bay S.C., Showell took a husband and wife out on a charter and had five keepers and 30 throwbacks. Showell was fishing in the usual spots at Mankiller, Little Panama and ICW 138. The store was across the street from the Comcast office left vacant when it moved to Audubon this past spring, as soon as Comcast's contract with Gloucester City expired. Zeises was in his 21st year at the pharmacy, which he said opened several years before he arrived there, replacing the old Quality Drug store at the site. RXD will also close three stores in Camden, ending its retail presence - as RXD - in New Jersey altogether. The Coast Guard Base was vacated in 1987. And several years later the federal government gave the deed to the City of Gloucester City. And there the base has set for nearly 15 years. Each election some politician running for office would announce a grandiose plan for the site but nothing much came of those promises but more development studies. While coalition forces yesterday searched compounds in the Sayed Abad district of Wardak province for a Taliban commander, a cadre of militants inside a barricaded house attacked troops with grenades, machine guns and small-arms fire. Coalition forces fought back using small arms and grenades, and they called in an air strike, killing an unknown number of the enemy fighters, military officials said. Combined forces also came under ambush during a July 21 operation in the Maruf district of Kandahar province. As troops patrolled the area, militants attacked from a fortified position, using small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Raymond Cooney, age 77, of Gloucester City passed away on July 22. Raymond was born in Philadelphia and was a resident of Gloucester City for over 44 years. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his retirement from PLYGEM, Raymond worked many years for the Gloucester City Board of Education and the Gloucester City Highway Department Streets Division. I graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in 1943. The same year, I received notice that I was drafted in the U.S. Army. Sister sent a letter to the draft board asking that I could graduate before entering the army. As long as I kept up my grades and maintained good averages, I was allowed to graduate. If I failed, I had to report to the draft board. I was able to graduate in June. Sister Maria DeChantal gave me a medal and made me promise to wear it at all times. I taped it to my dog tags. Having being wounded, and serving in the Battle of the Bulge, I retuned home. I showed Sister the medal, which she had given me.
