Spring Fishing Season starts Saturday*

source www.nj.com This Saturday ushers in what many consider the start of the spring fishing season in New Jersey. It's when the striped bass become legal in all state waters. Keep in mind, however, that outside the state waters in the EEZ zone, there is a complete moratorium on the taking of striped bass throughout the year. In all cases along the Delaware Bay, it is imperative that you use bloodworms, as other baits such as clams and bunker just do not produce. It is likewise important to observe closely the tides, as in many places there is little water left when the tide recedes. Fortescue is famous for this, as when the tide is low, even a long cast puts you in only a foot or so of water. Of course the banks along the Delaware River will see some action this spring. Anywhere from Gloucester City down to... Read more →

Bass Pro Shops, Bellmawr Pulls in a Big Fish?

source http://blog.markmatthews.com Tonight I attended Bellmawr's monthly council meeting. I went in with 2 "edgier" items on my agenda, and the mayor added in an update of the landfill... which I think may be of bigger interest to the public. Summary of my discussions with Council: 1) The million dollar giant house in Bellmawr, has had a giant political sign up on the front lawn for weeks. Political signs are against a town ordinance. Should the sign come down, or is it ok for us all to put up signs? 2) The Courier-Post had an article today about Haddon Township's plan to pass a "No Pay-to-Play" ordinance, and I suggested that Bellmawr do the same... to be ahead of other towns. 3) The mayor, recognizing me from prior council meetings where I asked about the landfill, offered an update on................. read more Related: Bellmawr news Read more →

An Irish Chuckle for the day

Happy St Patrick’s Day. One day an Irishman who had been stranded on a deserted island for over 10 years, saw a speck on the horizon. He thought to himself, "It's certainly not a ship." And, as the speck got closer and closer, he began to rule out the possibilities of a small boat and even a raft. Suddenly there emerged from the surf a wet-suited black clad figure. Putting aside the scuba gear and the top of the wet suit, there stood a drop-dead gorgeous blonde! The glamorous blonde strode up to the stunned Irishman and said to him, "Tell me, how long has it been since you've had a cigarette?" "Ten years," replied the amazed Irishman. With that, she reached over and unzipped a waterproofed pocket on the left sleeve or her wetsuit, and pulled out a fresh pack of cigarettes. He takes one, lights it, and takes... Read more →

WHEN EAST MEETS WEST the Doll Festival

by Hank F. Miller Jr. The Doll Festival, which is also called The Girls' Festival or Peach Festival is observed on March 3. This is a festival of young girls. Dolls in ancient costumes are displayed on tiers of shelves covered with red cloth. These dolls represent the emperor and empress, their noble court ladies-in- waiting and ministers. The Doll Festival dates from medieval times, but it was not until the 18th century that the custom of displaying dolls came into fashion. The dolls are usually on display for about a week, but it is customary to put them away soon after March 3, because leaving them out for a long time is said to delay a daughter's marriage. Since the tragic accident there has been a number of Toms’s former students and friends posting comments on CNB. It should be noted that at no time did the family ask to hold the funeral services for Mr. Gurchick at the high school. What they did ask was to be able to hold a Memorial Service at the school for Tom at a later date. That request was denied by Administrator Paul Spaventa and the Board solicitor. What a tribute this would have been to the man who gave his whole life to the Gloucester City School District. According to Board... Read more →
