WHEN EAST MEETS WEST: Church Bulletin Booo-Boos

By Hank F. Miller Jr I received this from a good friend awhile back. Thank God for church ladies with typewriters. These sentences actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced at church services: The Fasting & Prayer Conference: includes meals. The sermon this morning: "Jesus walks on the Water." The sermon tonight: "Searching for Jesus." Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. The peacemaking meeting scheduled for today has been canceled due to a conflict. Remember in prayer the many that are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say "Hell" to someone who doesn't care much about you. Don't let worry kill you off -- let the Church help. Miss Charlene Mason sang "I will not pass this way again," giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.... Read more →

Gloucester Catholic:Talented Dacierno left dreams on field

source www.courierpostonline.com Bob Dacierno, 62, still loves the summer game even in the dead of winter and even well past his playing days. "It is an everyday sport," he said, "you are going bad one day and the next day you are a hero." The former Gloucester Catholic High School star, who was named All South Jersey and first-team All State as a senior third baseman for the Rams in 1963, never got to live out his dream and become a Major League baseball hero. Life got in the way after Dacierno was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers out of high school and went on to play for Tom Lasorda in Pocatello, Idaho in the minors. Dacierno came home twice during spring training because his mother was sick back in 1966 -- and he never went back the second time. Read more →

Letters: Hello from Germany!

From here we had a big formation and turned in all of our weapons and sensitive items and start to begin in processing stage. After about 2 hours in Rammstein we took a 1 1/2hr bus ride to Hanau were we downloaded all of our rucksacks and gear and the soldiers signed for their rooms. After all was finished we marched over to the Gym singing cadence and it was finally then when it all hit me that were HOME and everything we did and accomplished over the past 15 months. It's sad that we lost (3) soldiers: SGT Horner (sniper fire), SPC Murchinson, and SPC Farrar (IED's/ EFP's) and they couldn't be here to celebrate and... Read more →

RE: The Human Society of the United States Allegations about handling of disabled cattle

January 30, 2008 "I am deeply concerned about the allegations made regarding inhumane handling of non-ambulatory disabled cattle in a federally inspected slaughter establishment. "We are confident in our inspection system and the food safety regulations that ensure the safety and wholesomeness of the food supply. Among the federal safeguards in place, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) prohibits non-ambulatory disabled cattle and cattle tissue identified as specified risk materials for use in human food. "I have called on the Office of the Inspector General to work with FSIS and the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) to conduct an investigation into this matter. Letters: Before Toll Hikes, Cut Labor Costs

Approximately 83,000 employees at an average salary of $50,000 equals ... let's see ... $4.15 billion. That's only for salaries. Add 10 percent for payroll taxes and another 3 percent for minimal pension costs and that equals an additional $540 million. Therefore, labor costs alone account for at least 14 percent of the total 2007-08 New Jersey budget. That doesn't even include health benefits. Now Gov. Jon S. Corzine has outlined his plan to raise revenue so the state can meet its obligations. He says the debt of the state of New Jersey is equal to $45,000 per household, and this is why the Legislature must continue to raise "revenue." ote that I said raise "revenue" and not raise taxes. Our state politicians no longer raise taxes. Instead, they burden us with all kinds of business-related and personal fees, costs, tolls, etc. so they can say they didn't raise taxes... Read more →

Mandatory Spay/Neuter Reintroduced in New Jersey

source American Kennel Club The bill would require that before a dog could be released from any shelter or pound it must be sterilized, unless the owner can provide documentation of the following: that the dog "has been shown" within the last 12 months; or that the owner is a "professional licensed breeder registered with the American Kennel Club"; or a licensed veterinarian has determined that sterilization would be detrimental to the dog's health. Sterilization is required for all dogs impounded, even if it is the first time the dog has been detained. The majority of purebred dogs never compete in AKC events and would not be eligible for this exemption. Further, the American Kennel Club does not license breeders. Therefore, this bill creates conditions that the vast majority of responsible dog owners cannot possibly meet. The American Kennel Club opposes the concept of breeding permits, breeding bans, or the... Read more →

Letters: No Excuses, It is your duty and responsibility to Vote*

As a registered voter since 1981, I have lived in three municipalities in those years (Gloucester City, Collingswood and Brooklawn). I have never had a problem voting anywhere. The polling places have always been convenient and the people there have always been helpful. It is my cherished civic duty to vote and I always make the time to do so. Polls open at 6AM and close at 8PM, so to those people who say they haven't the time to vote because of school or work, I say "Try harder!" Anything that is important to the individual is worth the rearranging of one's schedule. Elections are scheduled well in advance, so make a mental note to allow time to get to your polling place. Your ability and right to vote is too important to dismiss because of work or school. You only vote once and it does not take very long.... Read more →

Gloucester City: Plans Call For a Irish Themed Village of Shops and Restaurants

The City has most recently issued a Request for Qualifications for developers and builders that are interested in enhancing the housing/business stock along the City's waterfront area. This is part of a Citywide revitalization effort that began in 2007 calling for the King Street corridor to become a festival retail and entertainment destination by locating stores, restaurants, and housing near the existing waterfront park and marina. As part of a much larger plan, the conversion of the King Street corridor into a regional destination is just one of the recommendations contained in a Community Insights™ market analysis and retail assessment that was conducted last year by the JGSC Group of Pennsauken, who are currently serving as the City's business recruitment and... Hunting & Fishing: Bow hunts lasting lot longer now

source http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com This 2007-08 hunting season is the best example I've ever seen as to why the trade was more than worth it. The reason: the bucks have only just begun to move 24-7 in search of does in estrus, and should continue to do so well into February. The switch was really turned on last weekend by the snow/sleet/freezing weather/ice. Not only were the bucks on the move, but does, feral hogs and all sorts of other wild critters. I even made a rare daytime sighting of a huge bobcat on the move. Though I'll not argue with wildlife biologists that the rut, or breeding season for deer, is determined by the number of hours of daylight, but I will argue until the cows come home that the weather has as much to do with deer movement as the number of daylight hours. I tell ya', until the nasty... Read more →

Local dog beats death, heads to Westminster*

source Press of Atlantic City.com By BRIAN IANIERI Staff Writer, Published: Saturday, January 26, 2008 The story of "Bo the show dog" is like a Jack London novel. Just replace dogsleds and the call of the wild with primping and daily tooth brushing. Bo was a puppy living with females when his jealous 250-pound father mauled him, his teeth clenched around Bo's throat so tight that pepper spray wouldn't stop him. Bo was 10 months old, and his father saw him as competition for the females. Following that incident, Bo, a mastiff, shivered at his own shadow. His breeder gave him to the veterinarian, whose mastiff had just died from bone cancer. That vet acclimated Bo to people again and built his confidence around other animals. read more Read more →

GLOUCESTER CITY: The Wandering "Miller Avenue Puppy" is now safe & warm

She is now safe and warm at Almost Home Animal Shelter in Pennsauken where she will be evaluated. Although this dog is very shy and was very frightened, she was not aggressive and I was able to handle her, surprisingly she actually climbed into my lap minutes after being caught. Nancy Welsh from Almost Home came and picked her up then called stating the dog was licking her hands...amazing considering this dog was running from humans for months. Many people became concerned and upset when they were told not to feed this dog but it was necessary so that I could be the sole contact and build a relationship with her. Once we fell into a routine, she began to trust me which allowed me to get her. With the help... Read more →

Letters: Today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer

My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the Orange County Register which, of course, was not printed. So, I decided to "print" it myself by sending it out on the Internet. Pass it along if you feel so inclined. Dave LaBonte (signed) Written in response to a series of letters to the editor in the Orange County Register: Dear Editor: So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry. Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in... Read more →

Honestly, things can get a little stressful with all there is to do. Fortunately, the stores, restaurants, and businesses in Gloucester City offer almost everything you could want or need to enjoy the game. When East meets West :The Educational System in Japan

by Hank F. Miller Jr. When my wife Keiko and I visited my home town of Gloucester City N.J. There were many people asked us many questions and the one popular one seemed to be about the Japanese educational system. So I'll now try to do my best to explain a portion of it. What is education? If education is learning to conform to group standards and learning to recite as many facts as possible to pass the next exam, then Japan has a good educational system. The excellent performance of Japanese students in the classroom cannot be denied. A few years ago it was reported that Japan had 99% literacy rate while 25% of American students did not graduate from high school. According to a test conducted by the Stockholm-based International Association for Evaluation of Educational Achievement for Japanese 10-year-olds, along with their Korean and Finnish counterparts, scored around... Brooklawn: Furrever Friends to fight their case in court

Dear Editor: The Borough of Brooklawn is about to embark on an injustice to their citizens by: Spending thousands of tax dollars to protect a USELESS law Pushing out a non-profit animal rescue that has been providing FREE humane animal welfare services to their residents for years Assuring that MORE stray animals will walk their streets Setting a precedent that “no good deed is unpunished” Residents of Brooklawn: your voice is needed to STOP this ridiculous, ego-driven controversy. Only YOU can stop this waste of money, effort, and time on the part of your town council. Last week, Furrever Friends (FFRV) was featured on FOX and Channel 3 News regarding the rescue of a mother cat and her 3 kittens; they were found hogtied, in a knotted trash bag, in a dumpster in Brooklawn, NJ. Last year, they instructed the wife of a Council Member how to bottle fed several... Read more →

Hunting and Fishing: A big bonus

source www.news-leader.com Had it not been for the efforts of hunters, snow goose numbers could have spiraled out of control and nature would have provided a correction: The geese would have decimated their own nesting habitat, then starvation and disease would have set in. Recovering from such catastrophic population crashes takes decades. Hunting proved to be a viable option to control the population. The conservation order extends the hunting season for snow geese, including the blue-color phase, and Ross's geese until April 30, with no bag limit. A valid Missouri migratory bird hunting permit is the only permit required. read more Read more →

Sharpshooters Aim to Protect N.J. Mall From Deer

source http://abc.go.com By SUSAN JAMES Jan. 25, 2008 — Deer are in the headlights these days, maimed along the nation's roadways and nibbling away at suburban gardens. Now they're closing in on one of America's poshest addresses -- New Jersey's Short Hills Mall, home to high-end stories like Cartier and Coach -- and local officials are striking back. On Jan. 29, Essex County will send sharpshooters into South Mountain Reservation, a 2,000-acre swath of woodland that sits smack in the middle of tony towns like Maplewood, Milburn and the Oranges for a month-long deer kill. New Jersey is no stranger to marauding wildlife. In 2004, the state shot more than 328 black bears in one season after widespread reports of the animals invading backyards.. It was the first such hunt in more than three decades, and environmentalists say development is to blame. read entire article Read more →

"Stop for the Light or Stop for Us" Initiative Unveiled

New Effort Designed to Deter Motorists from Running Red Lights FREEHOLD -- Division of Highway Traffic Safety Director Pam Fischer, joined by officers from the Freehold Township, Manalapan and Marlboro Police Departments, today unveiled a new law enforcement and public awareness initiative designed to deter motorists from running red lights. "Red-light running, like speeding, tailgating and not stopping or slowing at stop-controlled intersections, is an aggressive driving behavior that is truly a national safety problem," Fischer said. "Every year, more than 200,000 crashes, resulting in nearly 1,000 fatalities and 180,000 injuries, occur across the country as a result of drivers who ran through a red light. The injury rate for red-light crashes is nearly 47 percent higher then for other crash types." Under the new program, the police departments will set up weekly surveillance sites at undisclosed intersections on major roadways in their municipalities. Officers will be located in every... Hunting and Fishing: Low fish counts made '07 a bust

source www.presstelegram.com The rock cod were off limits for January and February and the guys weren't excited about the only fishing available, which was basically sculpin and sand dabs. Sure, bass were also available if you had live squid, which didn't appear very often. So everybody looked forward to the giant, red devil squid working their way into the Los Angeles waters. They finally showed up and were so thick they chased the rockfish out of the area. Also, all the pelagics, yellowtail, barracuda and calicos went somewhere else to escape these scavenging critters. read more Read more →

Letters: Furrever Friends Shutting Down For Now Due To Brooklawn, NJ

01/23/08 To Furrever Friends Rescue & Volunteers' dedicated volunteers, supporters and the community, It is with a torn heart that I am writing to inform you that Furrever Friends Rescue & Volunteers is shutting down ALL our rescue efforts until further notice. We have often briefly closed when, like many rescues, we are filled to capacity. This is not the case now though. Furrever Friends Rescue is closing at this time due to the fact we have been fighting the aggressive efforts of Brooklawn Township to shut down one of our foster homes in their town. The town has refused to work with our volunteer foster, Ms. Smith, and instead has fined her under their "pet limit ordinance". We have stayed open up until now while we tried to reason with Brooklawn about the importance of animal rescuing and the crucial part foster homes play in it. However even after... Read more →

Letters: I Despise the Politicians Using Gloucester City as a Dumping Ground!

January 23, 2008 Mr. Cleary: As a long time Gloucester City resident, born and raised here, I was dismayed to see the largest utility poles I have ever seen placed on Broadway and Market Streets during the past week. I would appreciate it if you would check into this situation since I have heard that PSE&G put up the new poles to provide additional electrical capacity to Cooper Hospital in Camden and to supply additional power to other towns. To add insult to injury, I believe Cooper plans to place all cables and electrical service under ground because it is new construction. Gloucester City may be an older community but we should not be made to look like an industrial area and we certainly do not exist as the right of way for Camden's improvements. If this is true, why has Gloucester City been made to look like an industrial... Read more →
