WHEN EAST MEETS WEST : A Mite Louder Than Mice :

By Hank F Miller Jr. OK, so it's not the greatest conflict of all time. It's not Pepsi vs. Coke, Tom vs. Jerry or even Freddy vs. Jason. Plus it's not Japan-specific. The following swords of debate can be in any nation at any time by anyone at all. Yet for foreign residence hard pressed in a land that doesn't always embrace them, perhaps the dueling blades here shine brighter than anywhere else. This then is our question: Which is the better place for "Gaijin" "A foreigner in Japan" resident to reside? In one of Japan's never-ending cities? Or out somewhere amidst the plains and mountains of the Kyushu, countryside? "Hah!" says Gaijin A. "If I had to choose city, I wouldn't live here. Just visiting makes me ill. Deer hunting stories

By JOHN PITARRESI Observer Dispatch Dave Boni of Blossvale and his son Andrew came up with a great double-barreled hunt this season. Andrew, 16, a sophomore at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School, took his first deer on opening day of the Southern Zone season down in Ulster County. The next day, Dave scored with a truly big buck. Andrew was still hunting to his stand when he heard a shot at about 7:30 a.m. That was one of his cousins, shooting several hundred yards away and taking a nice eight-point buck. Andrew held tight, expecting to see something, and a four-point buck came sneaking through the woods from that direction. He dropped the deer at 48 yards with his 20-gauge Remington 1100. Andrew was warmly congratulated by his dad, two uncles and four cousins, and a bunch of other people, too. As far as Dave was concerned, it would have been a... Read more →

Posted on Thursday, December 13 @ 09:09:28 PST by dailymuse The governor unveiled his long-awaited school funding formula yesterday, and school districts and lobbyists are busy poring over the numbers to see who wins and who loses. Frankly, there aren't enough details for us to know its impact. There aren't enough details, incidentally, for the Legislature to rush this through by Jan. 8 either. But we do have one question: Where is the money going to come from? The new school funding formula, as proposed by the governor, would increase education aid by $530 million. But in all the documents we looked at yesterday, we couldn't find anything that said where a state – whose leaders say is facing a $3 billion shortfall – is going to come up with $530 million. What was also left unaddressed was how much the governor's proposed mandatory preschool program was going to cost.... Read more →

The Health Dangers of Using Anabolic Steroids

Media release From the Director Persistent reports of anabolic steroid abuse by professional athletes, many of whom are regarded as role models by young people, highlight the fact that we are now facing a very damaging message in our society—that bigger is better, and being the best is more important than how you get there. Abuse of anabolic steroids differs from the abuse of other illicit substances because the initial abuse of anabolic steroids is not driven by the immediate euphoria that accompanies most drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, but by the desire of abusers to change their appearance and performance, characteristics of great importance to adolescents. The effects of steroids can boost confidence and strength, leading abusers to overlook the potential serious and long-term damage that these substances can cause. While anabolic steroids can enhance certain types of performance or appearance, they are dangerous drugs,... Read more →

Saving Database Access More Crucial Than Stadium

NJLA Blog Source Dec. 7, 2007 Courier News On Line The recent controversy over the Rutgers administration's current attempt to spend $130 million on improvements to Rutgers Stadium goes beyond the state's fiscal situation noted in recent columns. It even goes beyond the Board of Governors' decision to eliminate a number of varsity sports to provide opportunities to the true student-athletes at Rutgers. Unless action is taken, Rutgers stands to lose access to 11 important databases currently available through the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative (NJKI), a NJ State Library program to fund science, technology and business databases to higher education, small businesses and public libraries. The cost to maintain access to the databases is only $1 million per year, less than 1 percent of what President McCormick wants to spend on improving the football stadium. It is clear that President McCormick and the Rutgers Board of Governors have lost sight... Read more →
